That is a crazy prize. I wonder if they expect most people (without trailer and tractor) to be able to pick it up? What do regular people do, hire riggers and a truck? Give up the prize?

You would think that the grand prize would include transport and installation.

We certainly pondered leaving the prize! But I'm a lot more stubborn than smart.... and way too much of a cheap a... uh, well, let's just say frugal and move on ;)

John, My wife and I were rolling with your story Bud! That said I would have helped, but you looked to be slightly North of me as I am near VA Beach. Glad to help though and thanks for story!

Yeah, But a couple tickets to the chiropractor would have been more appreciated!
;)

Oh well, it will be a nice addition to the back yard.

FYI - here's my tentative plan on installation.

Use the Kubota with 3pt tiller to loosen up the ground. Use the box scraper to peel off the loose soil. Till again, repeat until down about 6-8". Then use the back blade to level it some. Then use my 12' long I-beams to level better. Mark the outline and put stakes with height measured by laser. Drop "county mix" gravel that they use as road fill to a depth of about 6" deep. Put some iron pipe on the outside to set level. Then drag a long piece of thick wall square tube or U-channel (depends on what I want to buy for welding projects ;) ) to level out the gravel. Pack it down and refill the low areas. Then put a inch of sand or crushed stone dust on top. Let water and time filter the two layers together and stabilize. Fill low spots as needed. Then mark the layout and start point and git er done.

Sound reasonable?

Sounds like a good plan. Maybe before the sand, wet the stone and run a plate compactor over it.

So, will they come back next spring and install it for you?

Yeah, compact it well 2-3 inches at a time as you fill the stone. Compact the stone dust and screed it off with straight 2x4x8 as you lay the pavers.

A hand tamper is good for touch up, corners and small areas.
Shop Tampers at Lowes.com!

You should aim at getting the final height a couple inches above the surrounding soil, and high enough that you can put some slight drainage slope on it. Water will pond on pavers in a hard rain, or spring melt when everything is frozen.

Did your "free" prize include edging stones? A solid curb is a nice finish and keeps the pavers on the outside edges from wandering.

Thanks for the tips.

No, I didn't see any edging stones, but maybe in the 4 pallets on the trailer?

Oh, I was also going to put weed stop fabric down under the stone. I hate weeds popping up.

The total area will be larger than the stone with decorative stone for edging and some soil areas for flowers. Then solid edge to keep the separation from the yard.

The other thing that keeps popping up is tree roots moving the stones around. But shade is nice....

I don't think the weed stop is needed. The weeds & grass will sprout in the sand filler between the pavers anyways. Moss in shady areas. I've never tried the polymer sand fillers, they might be more resistant to sprouts.

From experience, "resistant" is the key word on sprouts in polymer sand.
