My favorite stores...Lowes,Home Depot,Walmart,Tractor Supply.

I went to Home Depot last week and picked up some rolled roofing, the pile was getting low and I picked up the best roll I could find, it had a whole about the size of my fist through about 4 layers. I told the check out lady the roll was damaged, she called the manager or someone who had rank on her and told them about it,they said knock 50% off. I said fine and thank you very much, they were happy and I was happy..end of story. :)

I have also noticed problems with Home Depot but it starts with penny pinching versus employee retention . Some years ago they had a very strict policy about hiring . After qualifying you had to go to school to learn the basics about everything they sold . Not an expert but some knowledge . I asked recently about this recently and found out this is no longer the norm . With employee retention being what it is they take anyone that can pee in the cup AND not burn the bottom out . (read: drug test) If you have even the slightest knowledge of something that will be your area . You learn the rest as you go . NO investment in training . Soooo with that being said it seems that you have to learn along with them . We have a HD here in Kingman AZ where I even shopped in today . When it first opened we inquired about kitchen work and were ASSURED that their contractors were the best around . In the paper that sunday was a big ad by HD looking for contractors . A department mgr. quoted me a price for hardwood floors at $18 a square foot . I asked if that should be $18 a square yard she said no and that it was correct because it was very expensive . The next week the sign was changed to read square YARD . This was a MANAGER!!! The best employees to ask are the ones that have been there for a long time . Now I know who knows and who is learning . Today I even messed with one of their heads . I told him that I needed some 2X4's . He asked "How long?" I said "Quite a while , I'm building a garage." He just laughed and gave me my Veterans discount coupon .(10% , took care of the tax anyway) . On the other hand if I can deal with the locally owned Ace Hardware store I will . They genuinely try to help you out . I am interested in finding out what ever happened with your order . Getting DK'd (Don't Know) is a pain . Especially when you have a schedule . Good luck .

Meaningless complaints?
I think not, The problem lies when you try to bring your comcerns to the managment. They either dont care, or are in so much fear for their jobs that they dont "fix' the problem. Many times its because of micro managment from the main office. to keep the stores all the same.
I think we tend not to remember the times when things went smooth.
I reciently wanted to buy two duplex outlets at Lowes. The self serve screwed up, and the person in charge was busy telling another employee what she was going to drink at the party this weekend. And after several attempts I took the items and went toward the service desk where there was an employee there idle.
I placed them down and reached for my wallet. She said she wasnt a checkout and I'd have to wait in the line. (only one open). I told her about the self serve not working but she insisted I wait in line. After a few minutes of waiting on a price check for the operson in front. out comes the manager, stands there like he is "Mr Big Lowe". The customer service person is now doing nothing... I set the outlets down on the side, and told him I guess he didnt need my business. And left.
Go Back?? Yes Yes I sure would. Ive been back several times since. The last time they were more than friendly and I had NO problems. Im sure that for the most part the employees who think they can treat people that way dont stay long.
It is what it is.
A huge company who can buy such big lots, that they can sell for less. Not have union workers, and have no real faith to the local area.We forfit the service in the name of saving a buck.
The workers are Local people who are only looking to support themselves. If by luck we find some who really are interested in the customer, then great. But we shouldnt expect anything different .
Lots of time the local harware is cheaper, So its our choice..
I try to send letters or some other comment when I find good caring employees, But I suspect they lie on deaf ears.
yep, another rambling .

We shop at our Lowes quite a bit. My biggest complaint is they don't usually have enough of something or if I need three items to work together they will only have 2 and then I end up having to buy 4 items to get a solution. Why do we shop at Lowes? It comes down to the hours. Our Lowes is open from 7 A.M. to 10 P.M. M - Sa and 8 A.M. to 7 P.M. on Sunday. All of the "local" places are open 8 A.M. - 5 Pm M-F and if you are lucky 8 A.M. - noon on Saturday. Sorry those hours don't work for me.

The couple of times we have had a problem w/ Lowes service we have contacted corporate via the website. We've then gotten a call from a Regional Manager - not the store manager - and said that he/she was very sorry for the problem and it would be addressed. They then gave us some 20% coupons.

Now another story about a time poor customer service worked out for me. I was buying a bunch of stuff. Including some ground wire for an above ground pool and Ryobi weedeater. The cashier entered the product number for the ground wire (cut to lenght) - well she mis-entered it but didn't catch that it errored. She then scanned the weedeater - it didn't take because of the error. She realized what was going on and corrected the ground wire but didn't rescan the weedeater. I didn't realize until I got home that I wasn't charge and figured out what had happened. I'm still using my free $200 Ryobi 10 years later. It has been a great trimmer, just wish the new ones would be the quality that this one has been.:(

Lowes is new around my parts here , just opened last year, with yet another 15 miles away.Im glad to hear you got it fixed.
I do believe the majority of the workers at the 'box' stores care and want to do a good job. However, with their different policys that are jammed at them, they are sure to get a bit of a sour taste.I hear daily descriptions of things they do, that would surely give me one. Im fact I joke that I wouldnt last a day working at any.Id be just too customer oriented..
Anyway, I see there are many people with thoughts about the service from many of these stores in here.
Is it getting old? maybe, but it serves a purpose, People can vent. and thats a good thing in todays world.
If this thread seems to bother people then they dont have to click on it.

This is the same reason I bought almost everything from Home Depot when I built my house ~20 years ago.

I could only work it on the weekends & I needed every daylight hour to supervise the guys I hired as helpers. I could go to HD for materials at night during the week.

Loaded up the truck Thursday or Friday evening, picked up the crew Sat AM and worked all weekend.

Back then I was paying $10/hr, and when you have 2 or 3 guys standing around sucking their thumbs while you go to the lumberyard, it gets expensive fast.

The funny thing is I met lots of contractors in there after normal working hours...

There is another thread about Home Depot which I have a post in about my problems with them. I really like having Home Depot around to Shop in, The same as I shop in Lowes and Ace Hardware. All the stores have different products and I like certain products better in one store than the other. I hate Lowes paint I dont know why but I have not had good luck with it. I can use Bear Brand paint ( Home Depot sells it) and it goes on better stays on better and is easier to clean. I do get a lot better service with the Lowes in Fort Smith, Arkansas. A few years ago they opened a big new store and I started shopping there. The customer service was really atrocious. I finally got fed up with it and sent an email to Lowes Home office. The next day one of the store managers called and said what do I have to do to get your buisness back. I told him all I wanted was decent service. I can honestly say that since we talked I have never had a problem with customer service in that store. The manager that I talked to if he sees me walk in the store comes over and chats with me all the time. There is a store near me that is half the distance to the one in Fort Smith but I still shop in Fort Smith because they have better customer service.

In my opinion after having dealt with the management in Home Depot about my problem the One that is in Fort Smith will probably not get much of my buisness in the future because of their attitude towards customer sevice.

After the 800 number phone call I was referred to the same store manager again with no results and a bad attitude from them ( We don't care ) type. My next step is to call Atlanta again and ask to speak to a big manager and if that won't work, I'll make some signs for my truck and proudly display them for all to see. It's not right to lose almost $1,000 dollars and the only answer I get is "sorry, it's not in our system" Somebody did not put it in the system and I am out $1,000 dollars..I have my receipts and that don't work.
Thanks for your time and I have to stop this bickering on here.
Jim

I get upset that HD and Lowe's might not have all that I need to complete a project, but I have never found either of them to be involved in unfair business practices. In fact, sometimes I wonder if the department managers have a head on their shoulders for some of the give away prices that they mark items down to just to clear them out of the store. I prefer to buy locally whenever possible, but today, that isn't always possible.
