Just a warning for those of you using Firefox ......
My copy of Firefox updated to version 55 this morning. This new version immediately disabled all the installed add-ons and labeled them as "LEGACY".
I downloaded and installed version 54 from Mozilla which solved the problem. I also set firefox to update manually so it won't re-install version 55.
Apparently Firefox is changing the way that addons work with the program.
From what I could find out versions 55 (current) and 56 (beta) were supposed to allow the older addons to permit the developers time to adapt. Version 57 (due in November) won't support the older versions.
Apparently this version didn't work that way.

Yeah the propeller-heads at Mozilla have decided to turn Firefox into another Google Chrome by sacrificing thousands of current addons that developers have spent years creating. I've decided to stop updating at Version 54 since the Classic Theme Restorer addon is being dropped. I'm thinking of switching to a browser called Brave. It has the tabs directly above page content (as God intended) and no addon needed.

What down side is there to 55? I am running it, and all websites are working normally.

Version 55 works fine if you don't use any add-ons.

I'm wondering . I have vs 52.3.0 32 bit and it indicates I 'm up to date . Wondering if that is so because I'm running 32 bit .

Version 52 was the last one to support windows XP so if that is what you have it will not update past that.

What add ons does one need?
I;m running FF on Ubuntu and have never considered "add on's" of any type.

Am I missing some efficiency? I'm NOT willing to give up any privacy.

I am shown as Up to Date on 56.0b6(32-bit) and on the beta update channel. All the add-ons have been tagged Legacy but it appears that Addblocker Plus is still working. Noia stopped long ago. The only downside, and this was from a few weeks back, is that the Close button in the top righthand corner now doesn't work. The other 2 (minimise) work as before. I have not yet found a solution to this>

My Laptop just updated to 55/0.3(64-bit) and it now has the Close button problem.

Add-ons can improve privacy. Adblocker, for example.

I'm not updating unless I have to. I'm on 48, and I don''t allow automatic updates.

No problems with my add ons, firefox running on Linux.

Addblocker as already stated is one of the best, and I use an FTP addon to update a our website and transfer large files between friends.

Define privacy :confused3:

If you don't mask your ip address and encrypt your communication then you don't have a start point to privacy.

If it isn't broken then don't fix it. If you don't need any addons then just continue updating as normal. According the Mozilla, Firefox 57 will be considerablely faster than previous versions so you will get that benefit. You might consider a popular addon called Adblocker Plus since it will be supported by Firefox 57 and beyond. Here is a good article about version 57.

The thing that I noticed with the latest Firefox updates is there is no longer support for the Adobe reader add on. So it will no longer open pdf's inside the browser. You have to use the built in pdf viewer. For the most part now there isn't difference between firefox and chrome in how they look. Chrome for me seems faster but I think Google is a little too nosy sometimes.

Trying it out for a while... My Firefox is V.50 with no plans to update. Sounds like Brave might be the ticket.

Brave was developed by Brendan Eich the co-founder of the Mozilla Project and creator of JavaScript. He was CEO of Mozilla until the PC police forced him to resign in 2014. So it's no coincidence that the Brave browser resembles the way Firefox looked before it became a Chrome clone.

How do I stop automatic updates from Firefox?

Open "tools", then "options" or just click on the "Options" icon (round circle that looks like a clog.) You might have to find the "clog" after pressing the 3 lines icon (far right).

After that, Go to advance...

Look for tab, "Update"... photo attached

Isn't Brave based on Chrome and not Netscape?
