Southwest Iowa. Michigan's chloride makes it salt look weak when it comes to corrosion.

Don't worry the slightest bit about tornadoes.

I should add that I know they are serious storms, but seems like if they were such a worry and problem there, people would just leave. I’m sure it devastates some people’s lives, but I bet not most.

And that's my thoughts about Coastal living in Hurricane prone areas. :)

I'd consider Weather in a move decision in regards to average temps, annual snowfall, annual rainfall, wind days, etc.

Salt is.... NACL.........Sodium Chloride!

C'mon young fella, are you unfamiliar with the common term used to differentiate CaCl from rock salt "chloride"?.. unless maybe its sodium chloride we load tires with. There is also Magnesium chloride MgCl used to keep dust down on concrete and melt ice. It's more like CaCl than NaCl for its similar properties. "Please pass the chloride and pepper?" (I guess you've driven less in MI than the 53years I have, ie: since '66)

NaCl is hygroscopic above 80% humidity, so rock salt is often seen dried on the road or side of you car in a broad ranage of temps. It won't melt ice below 20^ F.

Admit I'm not familiar with what Floridians have spread on their roads when they're icy or any other time, but MI puts CaCl on dirt roads year around to keep dust down.

MI's true rust culprit CaCl is hygroscopic above 20% humidity. It will melt ice to below 0^F. Unless your RH is lower than 20% it never dry!! Chloride in dust makes it stick to cars like it does to the road. It 'rusts' cars that drive on dirt roads in warm weather when temp speed the reaction.

There are an awful lot of >10 YO cars in MI that aren't washed every week but stay rust free by staying on pavement. Don't move here. ;)

Sooner or later, you or someone you know will be effected by a tornado. What I still don't understand is the prevalence of mobile homes in tornado alley, and no basements/cellars/safe rooms. It's nuts. I wouldn't own a home without a basement or concrete bunker.

Thanks for the "young fella" compliment..... some others say I look young also....... I will be 80 this year.
53 years of driving in Michigan is impressive, but I have been winter driving in Canada, Minnesota, and New England for 64 years.

 I say bring back the mounded earth semi-underground root cellar that has saved so many lives before, including several of my Hoosier ancestors. :)

btw, an F5 hit Flint a year before we moved there. 1953 Flint–Beecher tornado - Wikipedia

Here's a <three min story about the event with pics. "In a Matter of Minutes" - The Flint-Beecher Tornado of 1953 - YouTube

Here's two min of 8mm movies of aftermath I believe shot by the Bill Bottrell that went to our church. 1953 Flint F5 Tornado - YouTube

We consume CaCl in sports drinks and fermented foods like low-sodium pickles and beverages.

I casually put this in the same category as lightning rods. Actually that's not a fair comparison. I'm many times more likely to have lightning strike one of my buildings or me than to have tornado damage. :)

Mrs.tiller seen a tornado out the kitchen window a few years ago. It was in the next field over, about a thousand yards away, on a nice warm late fall day.
I seen it on my way home and stopped to watch it as it went about 1.5 miles north and east of our house.
After doing a lot of damage, it left the neighboring little town and traveled about 10 miles without doing any more damage until it hit a house not far from where I was watching it.

The next day the weather turned cold and snowed making cleanup miserable for everyone in it's path.

One of those things you just can't help but watch!!! Glad it missed your home.

Don't count out Eastern Oklahoma and East Texas; beautiful country, and some great people...but a bit provincial at times. A bit more moderate climate that Iowa and Missouri, but still gives you four seasons and quite warm in August. Lots of hunting and fishing. A bit far to the beach, but lots of nice lakes.

What with the weather around the Great Lakes it's a good idea to have adequate lightening arresters if one lives in MI. Mine is organic, all-natural, and gluted-free. I've also burned a chord or two of it at campfires.

If you are like me, I am accustomed to roaming the forests around here. Public land is virtually nonexistent in Texas, where I lived for a year. That is an important factor to me in choosing a place to live.
