want some post cards....

I have recently been overwhelmed by a desire to own a postcard from every city in the United States. I think that would be the coolest thing. It doesn't have to say anything, just be a postcard with the city's name on it. Would it be too troublesome to ask people to send them do you think?

That can be fun though. Here on TBN, it could be almost like Ham radio folks who send thier QC cards to folks they talk to.

My Grandfather had QC cards from all over the world, starting in the late 30's and going till early 70's. He had boxes full of them when they moved. But, someone put them in the shed, and they got damp. It was really sad when we found them.

Only thing, if you do this, is your address will be posted to the world if you post it(else do PM's before sending)... We can get you one from Placerville Ca.

I would be happy to send you a card, but it wouldn't be from my town, too small. I would suggest that you go to the post office and rent a post office box and use that as your address. There are a lot of good people out there, but like a bushel of apples, there will be a bad one.

QSL cards is what they're called.

QSL... I was only 8 when Grandpa got off the radio. I just remember he had walls covered with them before he moved, and still had boxes full that he didn't have room to display. His radio days went back pre WWII.

Is that still done? Realize I am looking back to the early/mid 70's when he was still on the radio. My Grandpa was still on tube radios! The recievers alone were almost a foot tall, two feet wide, and 1-1/2 foot deep. Didn't have to use the heater in the winter for the house /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I'll be happy to send you one from my home town.

I just have one question. How are you going to know when you have received a card from every city in the United States? How will you keep track of all of these cards? Are you going to use pins on a map?

If you're really interested in doing this, the best thing that you could do is probably get a state map from each state. A lot of the tourism department send state maps for free when contacted. The maps list all of the cities/towns (at least up to a certain population) in the state. Then you could cross off each city once you got a card from that city. And by using the state map, once you've crossed oof every city/town listed on the map, you could "officially" say that you'd received a card from every city because you verified through an official state document.

Sure is. There are about 300,000 hams in the US and one of the things we do is provide emergency communications when natural, or man made, disasters cause other systems such as cell and regular phones to be unavailable. Hams provided some of the early communications during the 9/11 attack. We also provide emergency communications during and after major storms and floods.

To keep track of them I planned to buy one of those alphabetical standing file folders and file them under the state first. Then I will make a spread sheet and keep track of what cities I have. You can go to web sites online that list all the cities in a state.....for example....here's one site, if you don't see your sity there, then I may have to resort to maps.

My Grandfather did emergency work too. He was on the radio with Pearl City just before nad as the attack on Pearl Harbor happenend. He did radio work during the big floods of '56 here in the Sacramento Valley. He had, I believe, "Civil Defense" emblems on the car, and the window at home.

Unfortunately, for a large family, noone continued with Ham radio in the whole family(me included).

After you're ready, visit www.arrl.org and look for a place to take the test. Or send me a PM and I'll look it up for you!

Code is not required for a Tech. license and only 5WPM for the other two classes. And that mey be dropped in the near future.

My Grandfather found out about Pearl Harbor from the guy two doors up on his street. A ham radio operator, he knew very soon after it happened.

Isn't that something? They should do a documentary on that sort of culture from back then to now. I think it was an important part of the 20th Century. Like the Internet, only not as ubiquitous.
