Please Help. Here's my dilema. "Bear" with me because I am very new to the tractor world but desparately seeking advice! I would like to buy the B7500HSD 4x4 w60"/MMM & FEL. I thought my local dealer would have a couple of these on his lot. He said he has one and showed it to me. I asked him what year it was and he said "tractors don't go by years". I thought that to be funny. Surely he could have told me if it was a 2001 or a 2002 model year. It looked like it was sitting for a year outside. I asked him why it said HST on the side of the tractor and he said that it's really a HSD. 1). How do I actually tell if its a HST vs HSD ? 2) How can I really be sure its a 2002 model? Can I ask him for a serial # or something ?? I don't want a B7500HSD thats been sitting for a year! (If it actually is one...) 3). Can I ask him to just order one from somewhere? Where would he order it from? How long would it take? When I looked at the hour meter it reads 6Hrs. 4). Can those hour meter be tinker'd with and turned back just like older model cars ? To me the tractor has the look that its been used more than 6 hrs. The yellow knobs on the controls have a very used look to them. Maybe from sitting outside for a year ( or two!!!). I hate to ask him (local dealer) all those questions but I figure if I'm spending the money I want to get what I ask for. Thanks if you reply.....I'm not even a rookie yet!

Winger,
Welcome to the TBN. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Steve Carver, a Kubota dealer and a member of this board would be a good person to answer some of those questions as well as many of the other knowledgeable members here.
I personally think that you have Every Right to ask those question and expect honest answers. If the dealer is unwilling to answer them to your satisfaction or appears to be evasive with the answers, I would run witih my gut Instinct and find another dealer.
You wouldn't expect or settle for anything less, from a automobile dealer or a realter.
By joining this board, your well on your way to be able to make an educated decision and to having the upper hand, over any possible unreputable dealer. Good Luck.

Winger, I think of HST or HSD as one in the same, sort of like bush hog, shredder or rotary cutter all refer to a rough cut mower. Many dealers and owners don’t think model year as much as hours when it comes to tractors. If there have been changes to a tractor from one model year to the next it would make a difference. I don’t recall hearing of any changes to the 7500. You could ask for one right out of the crate if you want to wait. He may not be able to give you as good of price. Dealers are willing to take a smaller profit (sometimes) on a machine they have had around for awhile. He would either order it from Kubota or find one at another dealer. It is hard to say how long it would take. I have never heard of anyone tinkering with the hour meter and I would think it very unlikely a dealer would ever do that.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your search.

Winger, I sure wouldn't hesitate to ask all those questions of a dealer, and he shouldn't mind answering them. I think a lot of us (myself included) think of HST and HSD as the same thing, but I believe you'll find that HST means "hydrostatic transmission" (could be either 2WD or 4WD tractor), while HSD means both hydrostatic transmission and 4WD. And while there's some truth to the matter of going by model number instead of year, you should be able to learn the date of manufacture from the serial number, and I wouldn't hesitate to ask the dealer. And certainly you could ask him to order a new one, but his price might be higher; may give you a better deal (well, maybe not a better deal, but at least a better price) to move one that's already on the lot.

Your dealer is correct in that Kubota tractors go by model series and not year but as Bird says you can get the serial number. Since they "block point" tractors by series and not model there is no difference between a 7500 made in May of 2001 and one in April of 2002. Why does this matter to you?
The HST decal on the side is on all hydro Kubotas, the HSD I beleive is a brochure or serial nomenclature that indicates HST with 4WD, HSDB on the 2410 is HST with 4WD and with bi-speed turn for example. They do not put HSD decals to my knowledge, just HST, just look and see if it is 4WD, there should be a lever.
Yeah, it may have sat out a little, so what, detail it and it will be plenty spiffy for a tractor, maybe a few bucks off? My dealer waxed and cleaned mine, it had sat out about 3 mos. I remeber seeing it when it showed up but before I had decided I wanted it. Everyday or so I would drive by and see it there and then one day I took it home.
I imagine the tractor you are looking at will be in fine shape when the dealer delievers it. There are no model years in Kubotas.

Tres, Well, if there are no improvement within the the series, but I can imagine that depending on when a unit is constructed, there maybe some "improvements", that could make the newer units in a series/family, better than the earlier ones. That would make a potential owner choose one tractor over another even though they are the same family. That is one reason I went with the 4100 vs its newer cousins (kissin cousins), the 4XXX series. I felt that it would not be enough of a difference to go with the 2002 model 4000 series over the 2001 4000 series. Even if they don't have a model year, like everyone is saying the tractor manufacturing date should be able to be revealed/acquired.

Yes, it is true tractors tend to have greater value place on engine hours rather than year. However, year is also important. A tractor that sits outside 1 or 2 years is much less desirable to me. Imagine if you purchased a brand new 7500 that has never sat outside in the weather. Now consider his tractor. Lets say it has been outside for 1 year. That is 365 days X 24hrs = 8760 hours outside. You will probably never put on that many hours outdoors if you owned a "new tractor". Sun and weather do take a toll on the paint, wiring, tires etc.
If you can get a great deal, then the (1-2 year old) model is much more appealing. The dealer seems to want "new" price for a tractor that has been weathered. Make him tell you the year and yes even the month if needed. Remember, if you ever need to resale the tractor the overall condition also has a great importance in determining the value and not just the hours.
