Walmart - End of an Era

Good summary of the whole issue:

So which comes first, the chicken or the egg?
Where are all these jobs the politicians talk about going to come from?
If we are going to put the big boys brick and mortar Stores out of business because we can order stuff over the internet and get it at home via "Brown" or "Fed Ex" in a couple days... who is the real villan?

I wonder about this when I read of local politicians and development plans - more retail development, even tho there are lots of vacancies in existing developments. Meanwhile, my family and our friends are ordering more and more over the net. When I talk to the local officials, they are just waiting for development to resume, and all problems will be solved. At the same time, thousands of lots in subs have been sold for taxes. In some cases, the land is being farmed again. I don't think development will resume, but my opinion and a couple bucks gets you a coffee nowadays!!!

For the reasons you describe plus convenience, price, saving time, and gas, we order quite a bit over the Internet. For us to get to most stores is at least an hour round trip drive. Just finding a couple of hours to make a trip to the store is not easy. But we can get on the Internet late at night, buy something and have it delivered to the house before we could ever find time to get to the store. We bought Amazon Prime last year before XMAS and it is saving us a huge amount of money on shipping. Prime gives you FREE second day shipping. I needed some staples for my staple gun. Lowes did not have the size I needed but Amazon did and had it to my house in two days and shipping was free.

We do mail order from a variety of brick and mortar stores like Walmart and Target since it saves time and gas money.

Later,
Dan

The villains are price, time and fuel.

Like dmccarty, internet shopping makes sense finically and time wise. Over 50% have coupon codes or free shipping and most have no tax. Every trip to town takes 1/2 day.

Yeah and most states are trying very hard to remove the tax advantage.

Like Pogo said," We have found the enemy and it is us". Hey, like it or not, things are changing like they always have.

I remember when the ice man would come around delivering ice off the back of his truck.

I ordered two motorcycle tires off the net that were delivered to my door and it saved me over $100. Mounted and balanced them myself which saved another $24 plus gas.

So true, particularly for those of us who choose to live
miles from any town. But my point was about, where are the jobs going to come from, when the towns dry up for lack of local business support.
As the Fed dumps costs back on the States, and the States dump costs back on the Counties, and the counties have nothing left in their tax base but 95% individual residences supporting all the costs of roads and services, the true cost of buying foreign manufactured stuff via internet may begin to be understood. One thing that doesn't change is that: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
Best Buy announced today the closing of 50 stores as a first step to survive
competition from Amazon and eBay. Bottom Line - Best Buy to close 50 stores in restructuring

I still prefer being able to look at a product, see how well it's made, and if it feels right before spending hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Wow! If you remember the ice man please post warning the next time you take your motorcycle out for a spin:cool: Just kidding; that's great if you still ride.
I don't remember back quite that far but I do remember the Milkman, the Breadman, the Postman, the gas man, electric man, water man ( meter readers ) and the Culligan softner man. Also local farmers selling their harvest and eggs door to door without having to pay for a permit. I remember selling gasoline for 28 cents a gallon at a summer job in jr. high school.
Also telling my wife years later that if gasoline got over a buck a gallon I'd quit using it.
Yes things will always change but not always for the better.
