I've been shopping batwing mowers....hoping this is the year I get one.

What do walking wheels on batwings accomplish?

Instead of (2) rear wheels with a common axle being aligned side by side, they are staggered or offset so that they will give better support over uneven terrain.

Is there a downside?....perhaps the length of the mower? It sounds like it's a plus to have though.

They also see-saw over obstacles such as dirt rows or holes. Great for cross cutting planting stubble before harrowing but typically unnecessary for normal cutting. If your land is fairly even and you just mow to keep field grasses cut, they are an expensive option with little benefit.

Are you talking about finishing mowers? I sold my 16 foot Alamo a year or so ago. It had smaller castor wheels compared to some other brands. When running at the highest setting over rough ground, you could bend these spindles as the smaller wheels have difficulty negotiating the rough ground. Just something you may want to consider.

The only downside I see is the extra $$ for the option. I do agree with CCWKen though, unless you are brush hogging / cutting fields with a lot of uneven terrain or land with a number of holes that the wheels could fall into, it is of no benefit. I have read some threads where the standard (2) rear wheel and / or single wheel set up fell into a hole and broke the axle.

Picture is worth a thousand words. Little heavier, more $$, easier on the equipment.
