W32MAGISTR.39921 Virus

I think that the most notable feature enhancement in the newer versions is the automatic virus definition update feature. Otherwise, I think that the differences are pretty small.

Most things that start automatically are found in the startup group on the start menu. Microsoft has a link to how to modify some of the registry based startup programs here

Jeff, If you are comfortable with this, it might help you. Click on start, then click on run. In the box that pops up, type in msconfig, then OK. A box will appear that is titled System Configuration Utility. On the right, you'll see a tab labeled start-up. Click on it. It will show a list of all the programs that start up when the computer does. Look for one that is similar to 'MS DOS STARS'. When you find it, make sure the box is not checked.

Almost every program you load into your machine will make an entry here. Most are not needed and will slow down the computers operating speed. There is a site, (which I'll try to find), that lists everything, (or almost everything) in this box. And it lets you know which you can remove. Also, if you remove one, and something you need stops working, you can go back in and re-check it. You need to reboot everytime you make changes.

If you aren't comfortable with it, have someone come in to check it for you.

Keep the greasy side down.

I, personally, run Norton. Used to run McAfee, but changed. And honestly, I don't know if I could give a good reason for the change. But the important thing to remember, is UPDATE. Frequent updates. Even if it does cost $15.00 a year. Recommended is once a day, but being on DSL, I have mine set to update every hour. Doesn't take much time, and I sleep sooo much better.

Don't know about McAfee, but Norton updates the virus definitions and program updates. Just my .02

Keep the greasy side down.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!!! I no longer have to look at that black STARS screen during boot up. It's been a long time. Apparently the Magistr virus put an =run command in the startup calling MSDOS Stars which is where I assume their code which did the damage to my computer resided. Norton took care of getting rid of the code but did not delete the call to Stars. I also went though that list you provided and disabled the rest of the "dead wood". Now I just have to get this thing with Norton Anti Virus straightened out....Thanks again!!/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Norton vs McAffee - I've used McAffee prior to installing XP on both of our home computers and have switched to Norton. It is much cleaner to install and maintain. Norton's automated update utility is superior to McAffee's. The subscription service offered by McAffee is a joke as they do not notifiy you as to when your subscription expires. The McAffee Firewall is a resource hog, especially if you are using a modem. I removed it hours after installing it. Worthless.

I just sent in a question to Nortons technical support web site. I've read several problems people are having and am not optimistic and this type of support does not usually solve problems in a timely fashion. I found a couple cases where my problem was spelled out exactly and used the recommended solutions to no avail. They say they will get back to me in 1 business day....We'll see.
