Interesting article. So a decade-long corporate strategy is being described as an "error" for which a handful of people will walk the plank.

VW is now talking about holding 9 employees responsible but at the same time they said that 100 came forward during the amnesty program that just ended to describe what they knew about the emissions scandal. Doesn't say much about corporate culture to find out that at least 100 employees knew about elements of the falsification but never spoke up or went to the press. German culture has a ways to go to rank individual responsibility above corporate or group loyalty when malfeasance occurs. It isn't polite to mention tolerance of **** actions but surely there is a similar root issue with German cultural dynamics at play in both situations.

I feel sorry for the handful that have been singled out. I am sure they violated no internal corporate rules at all. In fact they probably got bonuses and promotions along the way. This is not much different than the old tale about throwing someone off the sleigh to distract the wolves while everyone else gets home safely.

I'm not so sure. I'd put my money on some relatively high placed engineer putting his own career aspirations above other considerations and approving a deceitful strategy so he didn't need to disappoint his superiors.

Probably true, but it is almost a sure bet that he won't be the one who takes the blame!!
