Mrwurm -

You can find some of the more popular stuff on CD and cassette singles. (kindof the modern day equivalent of the old 45's.) Prices seem to fall around the $5 mark or so.

You can stop a lot of this just by setting your internet options in IE, if that is the browser you use. Go to "tools" at the top of the browser.

1. Select internet options
2. select Security tab
3. select Custom level at the bottom of panel
4. towards the bottom of the next panel disable the following:
a. Active Scripting
b. Allow paste operations via scripts
c. Scripting of Java Applets.

Click OK, then Ok again

This will strop almost all pop-ups, all home page changes by outsiders, and automatic additions to favorites.

You do need to be aware than some web sites will not allow you to navigate them with these settings, for instance my bank. For those, just change back to "enable" and afterwards, back to disable.

I doubt they will ever sell music "cafeteria style" (singles) again. They generally mix hits with new stuff in the hope that the new stuff will become hits once people listen to them. Selling singles will eliminate that route to get new material to the consumer.

Garage Smoker,

I made the changes you suggested and went to a website that I knew would slam me with pop ups and... NO POP UPS! I will continue to run with these settings and see how well it works.

Great tip! Thanks!

Your welcome. I have thanked the person who told me over and over again. I hate pop-ups.

But like I said..if you find you are having trouble accessing links at sites you know are legit, just change the settings while you are there. Only takes a second and saves a lot of grief IMO.

To get rid of popup's I have been using PopupDummy for a couple of months. It is a GREAT piece of software. One of the nice things about it is that it blocks the popup and makes a sound that lets you know it did. If it is a window that you do want to open you have 2 choices. First, if you want to check and see what the window is just hold down the control key while you click on the link. This will let the window open but only just this time. The second option is to enter the web site into the "safe list". This is useful for the banking site that you know requires popup windows.

I have copied the info from their readme file below.

I used a free program called PopUp Killer for a while. It worked in a similar fashion as PopUpDummy. It got to be a pain after a while because it make the "killer" noises all the time and restricted certain popups that I wanted or needed. I could add popups that I wanted to receive to a list and it had a setting to filter some but not all popups, but after a while it got to be more trouble than it was worth. Such programs would probably be okay for others but for me it got to be just as much of an annoyance as the popups themselves.

I am still using the settings that Garage Smoker spoke of and so far I am happy running my computer that way. It's just like being on the internet back in the "good old days" of a year or two ago before popups invaded the scene.

Your complaint is one of the reasons why I like Popup Stopper. It runs in the background and (at your choosing) gives a quick buzz when a pop-up is killed. If I go to a site that uses pop-ups for functionality, I just click once on the little Popup Stopper icon at the bottom of the screen and it is disabled for as long as I want. When I leave, I just click it again to reactivate.

I want to thank you for telling us all about the Ad Aware program offered by Lavasoft. I installed it and ran it and found quite a few offensive files that did not belong in my computer. Once I got them all cleaned out my computer started running right for the first time in several months. It had gotten to where it would never shut down without cntrl, alt delete and manually shutting it down. Internet Explorer was the culprit every time. Leastways I thought it was. The real problem was scumware/spyware (as you call it - very appropriately named.) Once I got that garbage out my computer started shutting down correctly again.

Once again, Thanks!
