Guys what kind of uplink/upload speed do you need to make video security access over the internet reasonable? I want to view my horses and property over the net - The property is an hour away. I talked to a local security place and they say if you don't have over 512KB upload you won't be happy with it. What is your experience? Thanks

DSL and up works great. Std. dial up is almost worthless. Anyone selling such equipment should be willing to demo at your location. May not be cameras on your location, but that dosn't matter. Dial up is doable but verrry slow and verrry low quality picture. To play around go to Speco Technologies - simply unique and see what quality of pictures you can get at your connection speed

I understand it may not be like watching TV but I would think with todays tech. they would at least be able to reduce image quality by sending back black and white etc. to have options to send smaller packets.
However, I have no Satellite experience - Everyone talks in download speed, not many talk about upload speed.

Can't offer real exp with sat service. All I can suggest from here is to try the above site. It will take some time to get it setup but you can get a pretty good idea as to what you can expect. All our installs are in the big city and even out 30 plus mile dsl is avail. You talking about five times dial up speed. Still not very fast but a lot better. Take some time this weekend and try.
Thanks - I'll test it out with my DSL here at the house - I don't have any connection at the farm yet - And as far as I know, only Dial up is available right now where the farm is at - I could try a satellite, but it's a lot of money to find out it won't work.

You might check into Wildblue. Their Value Pak runs at 512 download speeds. They also have two other packages that run at 1000 and 1500 download speeds. I don't know if they are sold out in your area but you might check with a dealer. If you are in an NRTC area....National Rural Telephone Co-operative....they are running a special for only 199 you get the equipment and install....and two months free. I also know that many promotions are offering a 30 day test to see if you like it.
I know that they are the most stable system of all the satellite internet systems that are available. They also seem to be the most reasonably priced systems.

Doesn't look like Wild Blue is an Option.

I talked to the Video Security company and they said it's not going to work over a satellite. I asked, why is it that years ago we could use PC anywhere over 56K and that works fine? He said you could use something like that to view video on the distant end computer - But only one user would be logged in at a time and you wouldn't be able to save the files on your local computer. So, I may go that route til DSL is available in the sticks.

Dialup will work fine.
I had my weather page (318K every 5 minutes) and a 60K web image updating every 10 seconds running on 56K dialup for a few years and never noticed even with 2 other computers sharing the dialup connection. So, you should have no problems.
The security system that I use has the ability to put up to 8 images up on the web every 10 seconds and it could handle it. I just changed to update every minute and leftthe image size to appx. 60K.
If you go to Security Cameras, Video Security Systems, CCTV, Video Surveillance | Supercircuits they sell a number of security systems to the web starting at very reasonable prices. The system I set up has a dedicated (5 year old dell computer) with a 500gig data drive so I can archive the events (when it sees movement) for well over a year.

I have an Avermedia AverDigi NV5000 card in a pc, with remote viewing. Currently it is monitoring 4 cameras. It uses my sprint pcs card that I use for my rural internet connection.
I love it! It sends me emails to my phone/work wherever if it sees certain objects or motion. I can even view it remotely on my pda phone (windows media, or symbian based phones). Remote viewing on the web is pretty smooth, and the view on my phone is pretty much realtime, with some minor lag. Makes me feel somewhat better i guess...
I would think that any of the big three, Sprint, ATT or Verizons mobile broadband services would hit you in some way. Check the websites out and see what the coverage area is. If you do any surfing, you wont regret it!

Please read the usage agreements. I believe Verizon might be the only one that does not have a usage limit. I got turned on to that using satellite internet. I could not run any of these types of servers or services without hitting the limit. I checked into broadband, and Sprint hit me good, but also had a limit. Stuck with satellite.

The satellite usage limits have hit me, also, for software updates - not continuous movie watching. Stay away from them! In the case of Hughes satellite service, it merely limits your download speed to a crawl for 24 hours. Others may charge you additional fee's.

I use a Geovision DVR card. it includes server software for remote web viewing. It does motion based recording, email alerts, etc. not bad for the price.
I have Hughes Satellite service. The issue isn't that it's satellite, the issue will be the service you pay for, and are you allowed to run a web server. my service does not allow me to set up port forwarding on the Hughes Sat modum/router, therefore, no remote access in from the outside to get to the web server. However, you can use logmein or gotomypc and get access to the machine remotely, and then view the video.
