Is there a video out there somewhere which demonstrates proper hook-ups and use of and safety issues with tractors and implements and common tasks ? Perhaps put out by farm bureaus or govt. ? If not, maybe there is an entrepreneurial opportunity for someone out there - it seems a number of persons accessing this forum would be interested in having a video - especially true where a number are first time owners and users. I have Mohammed's book which is very helpful but a video would be great as a picture is really worth a thousand words. Just thinking about this as I await my tractor delivery.

Well, that seems like a great idea....except for one small thing...If someone were to get hurt, hooking up or operating a implement the way that you showed them in the video....(have you heard the joke about what you call a cruise ship with no life boats, full of lawyers that just got hit by a torpedo in the middle of the ocean???) /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Well, you get the picture. The ambulance chasers would eat you alive...and probably win. Oh, and by the way, the answer is..."a good start" /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

PS Sorry about that, in case any of the good lawyers that drive tractors see this! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

When I bought my 4-wheeler the dealer made me watch a safty video before I could take delivery. The ATV industry is constantly a whipping boy for accidents they do not cause directly. I am surprised you dont see more stink about farming accidents. I wonder what the accident numbers are between the two groups are. 3-wheeled atv's are gone. When was the last time the big three had to change there equipment that drasticly?

The National Safety Council site claims that 700+ farmers/ranchers die from work-related injuries each year. Most of these are machine-related.

I've considered it. I've been involved in several video productions (as a producer) and the main obstacle is the cost of producing an instructional video for use in a VCR/DVD player.

A more realistic possibility might be a step-by-step guide (printed) with clear photos and explanations.

Even some manual knife sharpeners come with instructional videos these days. I would think tractor and implement manufacturers would face more liability for not having better instructional materials than vice versa. Ron's instructional video is a great idea and someone is sure to capitalize on it. I'd buy it and learn from it. Seat time may make for great experience and with experience comes wisdom, but a good part of the wisdom gained from any trial and error process is the lesson learned from the errors. Errors in judgement or technique are avoidable only if you know the right and wrong way to do it in the first place. Learning the hard way is neither efficient nor safe. TBN safety threads are terrific, but the visual impact of a video would be a huge brain muscle memory benefit for most newbies like me.

I agree. More information - especially pictures or video - is better than less informaiton. I have poked around a bit tying to see if there are videos and if I find anything I will post on the Safety thread. Regarding liability, while there are always those who will not take responsibility for their own issues, I would rather be the one (dealer / manufacturer) who gave warnings than the one who did not. Thus, a dealer who provided an instructional video with each tractor would be better off than a dealer which merely dropped the tractor off with little else. A repeated refrain when someone screws up and gets hurt is that they were never told that this or that could be dangerous. Personally, I would love to find a good video on tractor and implement use and safety. But the bottom line here in USA is that there is really nothing to prevent litigation and its attendant costs to all of us - but warnings really can help in matters with little intrinsic merit. On a related note, I recall reading about a warning on the box containing a kid's Superman or Batman cape - advising that it would not let the user actually fly - a warning that I suppose was considered as something that would be useful when someone jumped out of a window using one.

I think Muhammad would have plent of props! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Most of us have tractors, most of us can show the "how not to do this...", /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif and the correct way, /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif and all of us can benefit from the video. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
