Is there a way to determine if the vanes on a Vickers pump are still capable to pump oil and build pressure? My experience with vane pumps is very limited. This pump is my nephews and he asked me to post this question. Thanks,Jim
Seems like that if you turn the pump it will either pump or not pump or pump somewhat.
In order to check for pressure, install a gage in a tee and feed the pump flow into a valve and cyl, or do a flow and GPM test with a flow meter, a needle valve and a relief valve.
You would have to know the GPM potential and the pressure rating in order to determine the status of the pump.
Flow/Load test is the best way to determine efficiency (as JJ says)
but vane pumps can easily be stripped down and inspected for scars on the port plate and front housing (your fingernail should not feel any wear).....the cam ring should be smooth and not chattered.......the vanes should fit good on the rotor without any noticeable slop or wear
IMHO the vanes will be the last things to show wear
Pump generate flow but can not create pressure itself. Should be load or flow resistance there to create pressure. What kind of pump model you are using?
