I am working on the bale tension system for this baler. It is a completely self contained system that is not connected to the tractor hydraulics in any way. It will not hold pressure. It builds up as a bale is formed, but falls off if windrows are light or baling pauses. There are no leaks in the bale tension system.

I plan to rebuild/replace components in this order: pressure relief valve, check valves, hydraulic cylinders. If the first one doesn't fix it, I will move on to the others in the order shown. My question is: How do I purge air from the system once I open it to make these repairs? I strongly suspect that the presence of air in this system will affect its performance, but there is no obvious way to fill the system with oil or purge the air from it.

Do you have a manual for this Baler?
I would suggest having a good read of it, and fully understand how the hydraulics on this work, and how the manufactuer wants this baler to work.
Do this before you lay a spanner on it.

Im kinda of confused reading your question.
So is it forming a bale ok? or the bales no good?

As far as bleeding the air out, just function all your hydraulics and the air will work its way back to the hydrualic tank, in which it will vent out through the breather.

What should I expect to pay for a vermeer 505I round baler? I know it depends on the condition but what should I look out for?

You are correct, this is a sealed system, there are specific instructions for bleeding the air from the system. Your nearest Vermeer dealer should be able to provide instructions for doing this. There is no reservoir and cycling the hydraulics will not cure the problem. If your system maintains pressure while hay is being taken in, and builds to normal pressure levels, I would leave it alone. Replacing any of the items you have listed will not help unless the system is bled properly. While new to this forum, I have been repairing Vermeer balers for over 20 years.

I have a 605 b. I there any way to put an electric tie on it? Or even a hydraulic tie?

There is no factory kit for either, only option was manual. I have seen folks fabricate their own versions, and anyone that has the patients and fortitude to use a B model, can more than likely make something work. I have a couple hydraulic tie cylinders and hose assemblies taken from newer balers, send me a private message if your interested and I can get you a price.
