Hunters have all kinds of reasons to hit the woods each season. The thrill of the hunt, being at one with nature, putting food on the table, /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif(right) /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif etc. Then you have the more honest guys who admit they go to hang out with buddies, consume adult beverages, beans & franks without having to be concerned about the resulting flatulence due to the fairer sex spouse remaining at the homestead. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Have any of you hunters ever figured the true cost of your wild game meat per pound? The typical whitetail deer hunter here in Georgia spends by my conservative estimate about $3,770.00 per year in hunting expenses. Now I know some folks hunt in their back yards, so I’m not talking about y’all. I also did not include you folks who fly to those remote places where the moose, elk and caribou live. That’s an entirely different category. So here’s how it breaks down for the typical suburban Georgia hunter, and probably typical American hunters as well:

Your share of the hunting lease - $500.00 annually. This is a minimum amount. Many club memberships are over $1,500 per season.

Fuel commuting to hunting club land - $200.00

Food/beer, assuming 10 weekends - $500.00

Climbing deer stand/ stick built stand, including maintenance - $200.00

Camouflage clothing - $200.00

Boots - $150.00

Camping gear - $500.00

4 wheel ATV $1,400.00 ($7,000.00 machine financed for 60 months)

Deer processing, assuming two kills $120.00

I did not include accessories like doe-in-heat deer pee, grunt calls, plastic rattling antlers, weapons or ammunition or that cool new rifle you picked up at Bass Pro Shop when you rode back into town for lunch.

Total annual expenditure: $3,770.00

Average consumable weight of two whitetail deer processed - 100#

The true cost of venison = $37.70 per pound. What a bargain! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I guess it’s cheaper than therapy, right? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A week away from work, home, griping, hassles, the city, bosses, kids, and time with nature........

Priceless!

True hunters don't worry about the cost. We hunt for many reasons and many different ways. What it might cost you to hunt compared to me is a lot different. We hunt our own land as well as land our farmer friends own. We use our trucks, atv's and tractors that we own for our farm during deer season so that cost is always there anyway. My gun was bought 10 years ago but even then we buy guns every now and then for different reasons just because we enjoy shooting. We process our own animals and have lifetime licenses so all in all it don't cost us hardly anything to hunt. But we also buy our beef and pork from the Amish and process them ourselves because we can.

I have noticed you have tried to use humor in a couple post to hide your feelings on how silly you feel hunting is. What I want to know is why do you keep bringing up this subject which you admit you don't participate in or care much for anymore. It would be like me telling you how silly you are for owning two tractors for just a few acres or wanting to own horses. If you figure it out they really don't pencil out to be a good decision but you do what you want because you enjoy it and that is all that matters. Same goes for hunting. I do not know of anyone that goes to a hunting cabin to just drink beer with some friends. My friends who own hunting cabins do so on land they own that is a good distance from their own home. They go there and stay there during the weekend and enjoy their time alone in the woods. But if everyone realized that hunters weren't all drunks that liked to waste money then no one would have anything to talk about when deer season came around.

I have a good sense of humor and your first post about how silly hunting seems to you said the same thing that this one did so why repeat it? The humor of the first post is lost in a second post. The reason behind a second post is to try and prove a point, there is no humor in that. Take care and try to enjoy the day in whatever manner you wish.

I think the City Boy should take up deer hunting to really see what it is all about instead of criticizing us about what we spend to hunt deer. I've had my shotgun for about 20 years. $300.00 divided by 20 = $15.00 a year. I'm still wearing my 10 year old jacket and 8 year old boots. Cost is next to nill on them now. I wouldn't pay anyone to hunt on private land. So that leaves me out on spending money. I don't need to run away from home to hunt, no cost. I prefer hunting over hitting a ball on a golf course anyday of the week. It is relaxing, adventurous, exercising, in with nature at its best, tones your hunting skills and all your senses and thrilling to say the least should you happen to meet your quest face to face under 10 feet and scare the h-ll out of each other. That has happened to me 3 times over the years.

City Boy
Like we told you once already PLEASE SELL YOUR GUN & HANG UP YOUR HAT.

Because to be quite frank with you, nobody here cares that you either joined pita, or hate hunting.

You are preaching to the wrong choir, please go back to your TV.

Please stick with tractors, your credibility is going like the titanic.

I never did get that close, this ole boy was about 80 yards away, and fell over deceased in the same spot. And yes he was very tasty, every last ounce of him.

Robert and Ernie:

When I read your replies I laughed so hard that my kids came into the room to see what was so funny. You two guy’s posts are the epitome of my disclaimer. Maybe you should read it again. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As a matter of fact, I am a PETA member: People Eating Tasty Animals. Hehehe. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I’ve hunted since I was 12 and only recently decided to do other things. I might even hunt again once in a while. I find humor in modern hunters, especially since I was one for 25 years. I am simply making observations of what I have experienced and seen here in Georgia over the years. Why get your drawers all in a wad fellas? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Nothing critical here at all. You boys better not listen to Jeff Foxworthy do his hunting routine. Y’all might blow a gasket. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Lighten up and laugh a little.

He admitted to hunting in another post. He said it wasn't for him so I do not know why he is so outspoken about it right now? Of course, if his hunting experience is like he said then I understand why he doesn't care for it. However, if he had a chance to hunt like I and most of us do then I think he would have had a much more rewarding experience.
