I have an opportunity to pick up a 240D that is not running for $2200. The owner claims it ran fine all summer and after sitting for a few months would not start and had quite a bit of fuel in the oil pan. Other than that seems to be in very good shape (sheet metal, rubber, etc.) Does this seem like a fair price? My intent is to supplement my (now nonexistent) income by getting it healthy and reselling it in a few months.

If the seller is telling the truth then $2200 would be a very good price. I have seen people make these deals and it end up being something very simple that costs virtually nothing to fix. You might also end up needing a new injection pump or something simple though. You could probably expect to spend around $350 for that. Still a good deal. But... if the seller "forgets" to disclose that the block froze and cracked or the crank is broke- it could quickly become a very bad deal.

Dropping the sump to look and doing a compression test will be cheaper than discovering the engine is toast later, even if you end up not buying it.

I always ask myself this question (and we get lots of calls from people wanting us to buy their tractor "in good shape, it's just not running now and I don't want to mess with it")...If I suspected retail for a good runner might be $4500 or so (as in a nice 240D), and mine didn't run, would I offer to sell it for $2300 under that without spending a few hundred at some shop to at least find out the scope of the problem? My answer is always "No"; I would spend the relatively small amount to find out what repairs might cost. It is certainly possible for some person the answer would be yes, but would you dump a tractor potentially worth $4.5k for less than half that without having some clue as to the nature of the problem?

I love it when they advertise 'Ran when parked" on Craigslist.

Then you look at the photo and there is a mature tree growing up through the chassis. :D

Or when they say everything works good but needs engine:rolleyes: Dah! like the engine is the least of the problem

You guys bring up some very good points. I think you've talked me out of it. Too risky for my current financial situation anyway. Thanks for the input. By the way, here is a link to the ad in case someone else is feeling daring. Tractor - Yanmar 240D

My personal preference is: "worked the last time I used it"

I agree with Wayne 100%. Good point/advice.

I was just poking around on Craigs List and found a 1500D for sale. The ad read, "Everything worked great until the day my son overheated it". Must have happened recently, no tree growing through the chassis.:)
