Hello everyone, I've been lurking on the site for a while, there is a lot of great info on here. I signed up because I just purchased this:

KFR5GQc.jpg

Its a Cub Cadet 8454 with 600 hours that I paid $2500 for. It ran when I bought it but had one heck of a knock that I assumed to be crank related. And sure enough when I got it into the garage and pulled the oil pan the crankshaft has a crack going through a counter weight and journal. So obviously its going to need a new crankshaft and this is where my question comes. As I understand it and the reason for posting in the Kioti forum is that this is the same tractor as the DK45. Now I've read a couple places that the daedong 4a220 is a carbon copy of the kubota V2203. I've found specs for both crankshaft bearing diameters and everything matches there, but is there any other differences that would cause the kubota crankshaft not to work in the daedong engine? I want to use the kubota part because I can get a good used one for $300 vs $1500 for a new deadong piece. Any Info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As your aware the V2203 is a Kubota engine designation with two very different engine castings. The DI - direct injection block is a totally different block from the indirect injected engine.

The V2203 DI is the much sought after engine and getting real hard to find, the IDI engines Tier 4 have replaced the older Kubota engines.

I purchased a Kubota V2203 DI from a damaged reefer, the DI engine is the most sought after and getting hard to find, plenty of IDI tier 4' s out there Carrier Transicold uses Kubota. Damaged reefers end up in truck wrecking yards, if its just one part you need find a refrigeration shop that works on reefers.

Thermo King uses the Isuzu engine.

The bottom picture are injectors used on the Indirect injection V2203, top is direct injection.

One mystery solved, your tractors engine uses an indirect injection system. I would search for a shop that works on reefer units the mechanic will have a good assortment of good used parts.

Rusty - Thanks for the great info, I never even thought to look at reefers for parts. I'd like to find a repair shop to see if I can compare crankshafts, however the nearest shop I found on my quick google search was 5 hours away. I'll have to do some asking around locally though to see if anyone works on them

The V2203 is also a popular engine used in portable welders and generators.

Rusty think you have your DI and IDI backwards in your first post. The older mechanical injected non tier 4 engines are indirect injection meaning that the diesel is injected into a small side chamber in the head that helps it ignite quicker and also has the glow plug. The newer DI engines the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber in a multi event spray that is possible with the electronic injectors. Not sure if this will help clear things up but as long as you get an older engine with mechanical injection pump it may work with your Cub.

I knew that Kioti built tractors for Kubota and then eventually copied the designs. I have a very early DK55. My understanding is that the DK55 is a turbo charge version of the DK50. It is a turbo 2.2 liter. If the engine in the DKs are knockoffs of the Kubota, would the Kubota 2203 bolt into the chassis and connect to the transmission?

Take a look at this short thread about the 2203 and engine similarities. Certainly leaves on a cliff hanger though.

Kubota and Daedong only had a short stint together along with ford sometime back in the 60's 70's (someone may be able to clarify this) A few lawsuits have tumbled around since then.

These days the Kioti Kubota relation would be through Daedong Metals Co Ltd. Their foundry in Korea. According their website, they currently do business with Kubota, Hyundai, LS Mtron, Hydrotech, Doosan, Kawasaki, and some others. They produce and sell cylinder heads and blocks, flywheels, clutch housings, middle cases, transmission cases, hydraulic cylinders, valve blocks, pump cases, MCVs, and shaft and valve casings for a number of different industries.
Major Customers | Daedong Metals Co., Ltd.

I would say if some heavy parts on a Kubota seem identical to what you see on a kioti, its because Kubota bought the parts from Daedong.

One of the reasons Daedong/Kioti is capable of producing quality at the price they do. They own their own, very large foundry.

Doing some internet research, I found a number of sources that states they had a partnership in the 1980's.

"Both companies use a distinctive orange paint and have very similar styling. In the early 1980s the two companies collaborated to produce the “Kubota 02″ product line. Daedong provided the transmission and the steel for the body. Kubota provided everything else. After the collaboration, Kubota accused Daedong of stealing engineering secrets. The conflict culminated in 2002 when Kubota filed a lawsuit against Daedong."

If Daedong manufactured the transmissions, they would have the Kubota bolt pattern.

I did a 1.7 liter to 2.2 liter Kubota conversion in a Kubota L2850 tractor and since it had a DI engine sought out a V2203DI engine from a refer to do the conversion which i have a lengthy thread over on orangetractortalk about it. I am confused about some of the talk here mainly jimglassfords post above. I recently bought a Bobcat CT450 essentially a Kioti DK50 and the engine looks identical to a Kubota but from the specs i look up shows the Daedong in my tractor to be a 2.4 litre and the V2203 is a 2.2 litre.
