Isn't the Ranger a CVT (belt drive)? I thought the Kubota and Honda were the only non-CVT UTVs,

Polaris' website said shaft driven. I could be wrong. I don't have any experience with them after all. I forgot about the Big Reds though, very good option as well...

I have a 2010 Ranger 800 XP. I use for trail maintenance and general land work. Also use a lot with grandkids on board...rarely leaves the driveway with out TWO grandkids on board.

When I selected the three across seating (with separate seat belts for each of the three seating spots) was not one of my "important" features. Now that I have used for two years the three seat front seat is a mandatory feature. Really makes the time with grandkids fun.

I think you will find Polaris owners are generally quite happy with the CVT and the drive system. Great work vehicle and great "fun" vehicle.

P.S. take a look on PRC Forum...MANY Ranger owners that know a lot more about them than I do...TMR

Polaris has their Polaris Variable Transmission (PVT) witch is apparently the CVT. As I recall most CVTs transfer the power to the axles via drive shafts.

I don't know why some people are affraid of CVTs. They've been around for a long long time. Its a proven design, easy to tweek, relatively simple design and low maintaince. Really the only downsides are blown belts(not often) and useally a little less towing capacity.

I agree!! I have an Artic Cat 650 Prowler and never had an issue with the belt.It gets used around the farm everyday,also off-roading,hunting,anything.. The Ranger also has a belt... But a belt doesnt make them any less machine than the others or everyone would do it....

I agree 100%. I've got thousands of hours on 3 different Gators. None of them gave me any transmission problems, haven't had to change the belt once. Don't know what the fear is.
