What symptoms start to show as a hydrostatic transmission starts to show its age?

I have a swash plate design Hydro in my old Cub Cadet 129 that is about 40 years old and is still operates as the day I bought it 17 years ago. When they are wore they tend to not pull similar to how a clutch would slip and very much like when it bypasses through the relief valve.

Thicker oil will create more heat, which can cause all sorts of issues. Taken to extremes you could also cause high inlet restriction and mess up the pump. ISZ
