My neighbor is clearing some 12"-14" dia. Poplar trees for a garden plot. The stumps themselves are not near as difficult to remove as the large roots. Most of these trees have 4-6 large lateral roots, most are as big as the trunk of the trees themselves.

My question is; I have a large cylinder 4.5 bore and 20" stroke. Is it feasible and does a cylinder of this size have the power to pull these roots?

We would use 1/2" chain and a nearby tree for resistance to set up the "hydraulic winch" is this feasible?

probably, but would it be easier to chain them to the back of your tractor and pull them out that way? I think you will spend a lot of time repositioning the cylinder to pull the roots another 20".

His B2400 is just too light. Right now it is taking about 1-1/2 hours digging for each root and even then it is still some work with the tractor.
