you did not say which f250 that you have? From the 2006 towing guide a 4x2 super cab with 8ft bed and 6ltr diesel can carry 2512 lbs in the bed. The 3/4 ton designation has absolutely nothing to do with how much you can carry or tow you must use the guide. Just for comparison I have a f250 crew cab short bed 4x4 it can carry 2206 in the bed.

"1/2 ton", "3/4 ton", "1 ton" and other truck classifications are simply nomenclature. They have nothing to do with the actual payload capacity. "1/2 ton" trucks can have payload ratings ranging from only a few hundred pounds to a full ton depending on how they are equipped. Many "1 ton" trucks can actually carry 2-1/2 tons.

I understand. The tractor could be backed in and the FEL hanging out the back. I was trying to point out that the weight and high COG would not stop this from being "doable". But since I have a trailer and my L2500 is to big it would not be something I would not need to do. But it wouldn't surprise me if I saw it on the highway. :)

People have mentioned all the safty and such, a TBNer chaining a B in the back of a pick up would worry me less than the average DIYer leaving the Depot with 2x4's and such not tied down in the back of a truck, trailer or on top of an SUV. I might want to take my chances with a bouncing B7510 than several 2x's, plywood, etc flying around in the wind. :)

I agree, some of the stuff you see on the road is downright scary. Myself being trained in the trucking industry and being liscensed to 160,000# and multiple trailers have a different view than the weekend warrior. Wheeled equipment is always a problem as it moves on the tires and causes shock loads which is why some of the tie downs fail when used for equipment. I would worry most about load distibution with the tractor in the pickup box. As it will fill the box there would be no way to balance the load properly.

I am surprised at all the negative comments about this plan. All the salesmen at the local Kubota dealer have 3/4 and 1 ton trucks they routinely pick-up and deliver tractors with. Sure they have 8-10 foot flat beds but really no different than a pick-up bed (actually higher off the ground). They use steel ramps like motorcycle ramps to load them. I wouldn’t trust the tailgate to hold loading the tractor. Hanging the bucket over the cab might be problem if it has some leakdown (could make some kind of a solid stop or a headache rack). I might think about making tiedowns mount to the frame instead of the bed. There is the risk of bending the bed/cab with some operator error. The tractor does fit the truck capabilities so why not use it as a truck as intended? I say pull the tailgate off, get some good ramps and tiedowns, put a red flag on the mower and go.
