Yanmar 1500D
For you dealers that this doesn't apply to, please ignore my rant. For the rest of you useless pieces of cow dung, this is for you. If you don't want to do something, doesn't lie and tell us you did it. Most of us take you at your word and go away happy.

I bought my Yanmar 1500D about 6 months ago. When I bought it, the dealer (a local guy that sells all types of used tractors) told me that he had serviced it and changed all the filters. I had no reason to not believe him.

Today, I did a service to get ready for winter. When I finally was able to get the fuel filter bowel off, I was beginning to think someone glued it on, it became clear to me that the filter was probably put in at the factory back in the 70's when it was built. I have NEVER seen a filter that full of crap and still let fuel pass through it. There was soo much crap in there that I had to get a pair of needle nose pliers to pull the filter out of the bowl.

I hate it when people lie to me like that. If he had just said he didn't know when the last time it was serviced, I would have replaced all the filters 6 months ago and never complained about what I found in there.

I'm through ranting now.

Did you go back to the dealer and point out his mistake? I would go back there and politely request "please replace all the fluids and filters now as promised". Even if it was sold "as is" that was part of the bargain. At least it is worth knowing whether it is an honest mistake, he's just a sneaky guy, or he's an out and out crook. A sneaky guy might make good if he is caught red handed. An honest man will surely take care of it. A shameless crook won't fix it but at least you gave him an opportunity to redeem himself . It wouldn't hurt to find out.

That's what I would do.

Ozarker,
I don't want to act like I am trying to defend the "dung" but there is a big difference between lying about changing the filter and making a mistake. Are you sure that he intentionaly misled you? Do you think the other fluids & filters were changed? My thinking is that of all the things to skip on a service due to lazyness; the fuel filter would be at the bottom of the list. It is the easiest thing on the tractor to service! I don't know the dealer, but I can imagine how he could have made a mistake. In the middle of a service- the phone rings or someone comes in and he forgets what he has already done. It is easy to think that you should remember if you changed the filter or not; but if he is like us, he might completely service 10 tractors in a day. We mark each tractor with a crayon so we know where we have been because it is easy to loose track of where you were. With that said; it is completely possible that he didn't change any fluids and he lied about it (and maybe other things). I don't know; but I hate to see people start assuming that they were decieved by "useless pieces of cow dung" when it might have been an innocent mistake.

I'm sure he's a sleaze bag. I found out after I dealt with him and have met a bunch of other people he has screwed over. It is his SOP.

I have to admit to not doing enough research before running out and purchasing a tractor.

No. I haven't gone back and probably won't. He shafted me good and I just have to take my licks even tho I might rant about it from time to time. It is my own fault and there is absolutely nothing he can possibly do to make it right.

I didn't do enough research before looking for a tractor. This one looked good and ran good. It had a new FEL on it and the price was in line with what I had seen on the internet for that type and model. So I bought it.

Later, I discovered that I had bought a "paint refurb" that was in need of a lot of work. I have since run into a lot of people that he has shafted in numerous ways.

If I go down there again I will hurt him. So it is best for me to just take my lumps, fix what needs fixed and rant about it from time to time.

like some used car salesmen looking for a fast sale, this fellow probably figured he would never see you again. I guess he got that right! bite the bullet and avoid that place.

Since I bought it I have met a lot of local farmers and lawn care type people in the area who have dealt with him in the past. They all said he was a bad guy to buy anything from. Wish I had met them all before I bought.

How does this dealer ever stay in business? With this many bad experiences this dealer likely has no referrals and no repeat customers.

The country is full of guys like him but most of them are in the used car business. I don't know how they stay in business......but they do.

I can tell you a whole bunch of things that I would say and do to get satisfaction from the dealer you bought from. In reality I would go where I didn't have to fight with the dealer to get it right and chaulk it up to a lesson well learned. It probably isn't fair to the dealer to not give them a chance to fix it, but if you try to force them to do something and it is scam dealer you won't win either. It's nice to here from dealers that do mark their work (sorry I can't remember your name), but you know those dealers care by more than just the marks their employees make. The quality generally runs right down the line.
