I talked with someone that is selling a JD 30hp with a loader and backhoe built in 1985 for $9000. I will try to get them down on price but will have look at it first. What do you think about the price for a 1985?

Not enough information, but seems high.

I hate to answer a post with a bunch of questions, but sometimes it seems necessary.

Can you give us more detail?

JD Model? Hours on the machine?
MFWD (four wheel drive)?
Tire wear?
Is the backhoe the JD frame-mount backhoe? Any other attachments?

Backhoe new is about $5000. Rear tires can be $200 up new.

There are no other attachments and it is the 1980's model. He said there were about 5000 or more hrs. The bucket is 5' wide and a 30 hp tractor. The backhoe is attached under the frame also but said that it is not 3pt. hitch type. I still have to look at it and see what condition it's in.

Likely a JD 950. That's a bunch of hours... Good tractor's -- those 50 series, pretty bullet proof.

But... after 5000 hours there'd better be some new parts on there and in there (clutch and pressure plate), too!

Loader pins and hoe pins and bushings are gonna be tired and worn.

Have to look 'er over real good and $9K is too high a startin' point unless it's got new rubber and clutch and a number of other goodies as well!

Best of luck and let us know how you made out ---

I think it's probably a 1050 at 33HP. Basically just a little larger than the 950.

Both the 950 and 1050 could be either 2WD or 4WD. Of course 4WD is worth more. I think 4WD is worth every penny, especially if you're using the loader or working in snow or on slopes. You really need to know if it's MFWD (John Deere's mnemonic for four wheel drive). If the front tires have lugs, then it's probably MFWD. As a wild guess, I'd say MFWD on that used tractor would up the price by $1000.

I agree with AKfish that the clutch and rubber (tires) are a major concern with that many hours on the tractor. There's no easy way to check the clutch. You could run the machine up against a tree, put the transmission in a high gear, and then release the clutch; that should kill the engine. But even if it does kill the engine, the clutch could be nearly worn out. There's no easy way to check that, but if the seller claims the clutch/pressure plate have been replaced, you might want to get some kind of guarantee in writing. The only thing I can offer on the value of a good clutch is that a JD brand clutch disc costs over $400 (the disc for my F150 Ford truck costs a whopping $31). I don't recall the price of a pressure plate, but you may or may not need that. And if you don't do it yourself you're paying for breaking the tractor apart, loss or replacement of hydraulic fluid, etc. and transporting the machine to and from the shop.

I'd assume the used backhoe for a 1050 is worth about $2000-$3000. Check for leaks by running the stabilizers fully down (it'll pick up the rear of the tractor but you want that extra weight). Then, while the tractor is up in the air, swing the boom to all extremes, dipper to both extremes, and bucket to both extremes. Hold them at the extremes for four or five seconds. Then check all five cylinders for leaks. And see if the rear of the tractor sinks back down to the ground on either or both sides. If so, the stablizer cylinders need rebuilt. If you see no leaks, there could still be leaking seals on the pistons of the three double-acting cylinders, but it's kind of hard to test for that. Check the bucket and teeth for wear, too. All of the pins and bushings are probably worn which gives you a lot of slop when positioning the bucket, but you can probably live with that.

So you want to fill out this table:
$______ base 1050 ($6000?)
$______ MFWD? ($1000?)
$______ Loader
$______ Backhoe ($2000)
$______ Canopy?
$______ No guarantee on clutch (negative number, maybe -1000.00?)
$______ High hours (negative number, maybe -1000 not counting the clutch)
$______ Overall condition (negative or positive)
--------------------
$______ Overall value of the tractor

I searched the Web for 1050 sales and found quite a few. I'd post links, but they would only be relevant for a very short time. Use Google or some other search engine and search for "JD 1050 sale" (without the quotes) or perhaps "deere 1050 sale" and you may be able to get some numbers to use to fill in the table above.

In my earlier post I suggested that $9000 was high. I still think it's high, but maybe not too far out of line if the machine is MFWD and the machine and backhoe are in good shape and you can get some guarantee about the clutch.

Sorry, I didn't mean to write a novel, but once I got started....
Hope this helps.
