I do this with clear used hydraulic oil, but am concerned about small abrasive particulate in used engine oil. I wonder if the engine oil will cause you trouble with the pump and injectors over time.

Sounds like a good idea especially if it lets you eat and you use that filter!

Where are you and what do you do with your tractor?

Even if you ran it 50 / 50 I can see a huge cost savings. Plus you can get rid of your oil without hauling it away. Is a standard gas funnel 50 micron or is there a special funnel available for this. Thanks for the info.

Will the oil stay in solution with the diesel or will it settle out if it sets for a small period of time?
Is it any harder on the pump with the thicker solution, especially in cold weather?

Wow I guess a diesel engine will burn just about anything. I read in a diesel truck magazine where a guy was using used ATF to run his diesel pickup. He did run the oil thru a 3 micron filter and added some cetane boost to each tank but he said that his truck ran good. It seems too risky to me to use used and possibly contaminated oils in an expensive engine. I would not trust the filtering process to remove all the possible trash. Something could ruin some internal parts very quickly.

Back in the late 80's I worked for a small trucking company that had 10 to 12 trucks. We always had a lot of used oil on hand at first it wasn't much of a problem getting rid of it. The oil company would come and buy it from us. Then I guess the price oil fell so low that they didn't want to take it anymore and wanted to charge us to get rid of it. This wouldn't do with my boss. So we made a pump stand with two very large oil filters on it and filtered the oil. Then we would pump the oil into all the short haul trucks. My boss had ratio figured out but I don't remember what it was. The short haul trucks was always the oldest trucks and the ones scheduled to be traded off. This worked out really well and in my opinion I think they even ran better and had less engine problems.

You know, it may seem like a good idea. However, to me, it's just not worth the risk. Used oil is just that - used. Who knows what's in it. I'm gonna take mine to the recycling place and be happy that I'm not threatening the life of my baby for a couple of dollars in savings...

Its a risky business. I'd use it in the oldest engine you have. For hydraulic oil, to me, the reason it was changed in the first place is possible contaimination ruining your hydraulic pump. The clearances are even tighter in the injection pump.

Of course some parts of the world get some pretty cruddy diesel so its probably just as clean as that stuff.

The oil is changed due to acid build up and carbon particles. I know you can filter most of the carbon out. Not sure treating the acid although mixing with other fluid dilutes it. The suspended metals can probably be filtered too.

We used to use centrifuge filters (Alfa-Laval to clean turbine lube oil at the power plant I worked at. It would run for a few days connected to the tank. I once had the joy of cleaning the cones. Great fun.
