Use of Timing Light on Golden Jubilee

I would have to ****** timing before every smog check...

If I didn't the tech would charge an extra $50 to adjust and then it wouldn't run right but it passed.

It's not letting me use the word opposite of advance???
The opposite of advance? Retreat. ;)

Nobody has mentioned plugging the vacuum line when setting the timing with a gun. Wasn't it necessary?
There is no vaccum line on those tractors. Many automobiles of that era had begun using a vacuum advance mechanism, but the Ford Jubilee (8N) style tractors stuck with their old vintage centrifugal advance mechanism.

When timing the ignition you don't have to worry about the centrifugal advance because the springs should hold it fully retarded at low rpms. When the springs get old and the pivots for the centrifugal weights get old and sloppy you will see the timing light flash seem to drift around instead of staying steady at one particular degree on the flywheel. That's when to replace the advance mechanism. They used to sell rebuild kits for them...but they are pretty cheap to just replace.

If you want to look at the centrifugal advance, it is located under the points plate. Just take off the screw holding the points plate and pry the plate up. There you are. As the weights fly out, they cause the points cam to rotate CCW relative to the distributor shaft rotation. Some people lube them.

I believe that a few years later, the Ford number series tractors went to a vacuum advance on their gas and propane engines. Don't know the details though.

A pencil was perfect for plugging the vacuum line.

This TBN editor makes no sene. If the engine knocks due to pre-ignition or low octane we cannot discuss a need to ****** the timing. But we can say that that the timing needs to be retarded.

It's a bit Orwellian - or would be if it made any sense at all.
