Use of Timing Light on Golden Jubilee

A paint pen is great for marking timing marks. Clean the mark well with carb./brake cleaner then mark it with the pen. It will be visible for years.

You have that backwards. You would have to be really young or never, ever worked on a 50s, 60s, 70s or 80s car to have missed out on a timing light.
Did but never had one barely had money for shoes back then me
And my buds seemed to always get them running of course you’d all laugh now but no money means being smart and creative

The point gap (dwell) will affect when it sparks (slightly), so yes the point gap/dwell needs to be set before looking at the timing.
Yes, something I learned many moons ago, dwell will change the timing, but timing will not change the dwell. I loved the adjustable points sets from GM on V-8's. Roughly set them close enough to run, then use the hex driver on a flex handle to dial them in through the dist. cap window with the dwell meter. Book called for 28º -32º. My Uncle was a GM mechanic and told me to set it at 30º and you're good to go. REALLY loved the Uni-sets where points and condenser were all in one piece. No need to completely remove the screw for the condenser, just loosen screws, swing one end out, then pull the other end out from under the other screw and slip in a new set. I wish all manufacturers would have gone to that for ALL contact sets. Back in the day, all of my buddies with Fords used a matchbook cover to set theirs @ .019.

Ah yes I remember those days of match book covers and the one hex wrench you knew where it was. Or you wanted to spend the extra $ and bought the "expensive" set that came with a hex wrench.

Timing without a light, what we would do is turn the distributor until we got the higher idle then turn it back until the rpms dropped. Everything was a rough guess when you didn't have a light and a tach that was wonderful magic box, anyway rough guess of about 100-200 rpm drop then lock it down and test drive. No ping or knock ya called it "good enough".

Keep in mind that adjusting Ignition timing as we are discussing only applies to gasoline engines. Diesels are different.

Someone asked about setting the "Dwell". Dwell is the time that a spark coil has available to build up enough magnetic field to make a spark. It is critical in V8 high rev. race engines, but a low rpm tractor is going to have enough dwell time regardless. So it can be ignored.

Timing specs were always based on the fuel at the time. Basically the whole reason for timing is to allow the right amount of time to pass between the spark and the maximum expansion of the burning mixture pushing down on the piston.

At idle the spark can be nearly at top dead center (TDC). At full rpm, the centrifulgal advance mechanism makes the spark occur sooner to give the charge extra time to burn. If the spark is advanced too far you will get what is called "engine knock" due to the max expansion taking place before the piston reaches top dead center and being forced backwards/ So after setting the timing at idle as described, I will often rev it up and listen. If I hear the peculiar knock of too much advance, slightly ****** the timing until the knock goes away.
That last step is absolutely necessary in high performance gasoline engines, but rarely in tractors. I just do it because it is best practice.

Something to consider is that although getting timing too far RETARDED mostly just affects fuel efficiency at low RPM, having it too far ADVANCED at top RPM causes mechanical wear to pistons and bearings due to the knocking.

EDIT: Reducing the point gap slightly retards the timing.

Good answer. I posted about the dwell and wondered about how critical the dwell was in a tractor.

I would have to ****** timing before every smog check...

If I didn't the tech would charge an extra $50 to adjust and then it wouldn't run right but it passed.

It's not letting me use the word opposite of advance???

Nobody has mentioned plugging the vacuum line when setting the timing with a gun. Wasn't it necessary?

Interesting, I couldn't get it to let me use ******, either. This editing program let me type "******" normally, but then would asterisk it out when I posted. Tried several work-arounds and finally deleted the passage.
