Ford 8n
Recently (as in two years ago) we acquired a ford 8n tractor with a front mount distributor. Today I finally decided that I would like to do a tune up on it since the oil looked like it was 30 years old as did the coil points plugs and gas. So I replace and set the points put on a new condenser and coil fix some electrical stuffs new plugs and finally I get to changing the oil I get the cap off and along with a bunch of black old oil comes out allot of large metal shards :eek::eek::eek::eek: they look like they are from a cylinder sleeve but what would cause a cylinder sleeve to shatter completely? and how would I go about replacing the cylinder sleeves and what ever else needs replacing?

It is possible the top lip of the sleeve broke and the sleeve moved down enough for the crank to hit giving you the pieces you found.

It's going to be almost a total rebuild. Can't put a band-aid on this one.

first find out what you are deailing with. is there enough metal in there to be a full sleeve?

can you se thru the oil drian and see a dropepd sleeve?

may sound weird.. but I have seen sleeves dropped, and someone flushed the oil pan, and pulle dthe head and put a ne sleeve in and didn't clean the pan when putting the rod and piston back in.

that's if you are lucky.. otherwise you will be dropping the pan ( take front bolster / axle off) and the head.

might as well check em all...

might as well do bearings. and fornt and rear mains...

:)

How m uch would it cost a shop to replace all of the sleeves and possibly the bearings?

shop charges on a prepaired block vary.. i've seen from 35-90$ per hole all depending ont he prep work and if anye boring is needed .. etc. for an N block.. might as well have a valve job done on her if the block is in the machine shop.. etc. check cam clearance.. it runs in parent bore.. and inserts can be installed.
