Neil, the seat belt thing is state by state. Indiana just made seat belts mandatory. Motorcycle helmets are not mandatory IF you hold a full motorcycle endorsement on your license AND are age 18 or older. Those under age 18 and those carrying only temporary endorsement cards (awaiting the full endorsement) must wear a helmet. Mandatory helmet laws have come and gone twice here since I've been riding.

As to pictures, I'll try to remember to take one the next time I have two on. Your mates would probably be really amazed at the semi tractors pulling TRIPLES here. That makes for a L-O-N-G vehicle. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

No helmets?????

Agggggghhhhhhh

Then again we have the helmets mandatory but that is all. So you see them riding with helmet, shorts, singlet and thongs.

I have come out of a ute when it rolled and know what gravel rash is, so I'd hate to ride like that !!

We have B-Doubles which are Semi-Trailers (that's what we call them) with 2 trailers. They are allowed on certain roads.

Outback we have the road trains which are at least 3 trailers and can be more.

Meeting one of them on a dirt road is no fun at all !!

Neil,

I'm afraid I'm one of those riders you'll see wearing shorts and no helmet in the summer.

The good news is you'll never see me riding wearing a thong. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

If it's any consolation, I do wear a helmet when I ride in the winter. They're just too hot in the summer.

NO THONG THANK GOD!!!!!!

In regards to the helmet issue. I keep one of my old helmets on top of the tv in the bedroom. Its just a reminder as to what my head could have looked like. You see you can shake one whole side of it as though it were a peice of paper. Back in my snowmobile racing days. I tried to enter an ambulance without opening the doors, at 90 mph. After it rolled out onto the track in front of me, following someone elses crash. Now you can see why I'm kind of fond of that ol helmet.

You guys scare me !!

But I reckon I'd scare you if you saw me around the yard in my thongs.

Ha ha

So you're the reason privacy fencing has become so popular!/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Nevada allows three trailers behind semis. California only allows two. I can remember seeing UPS doing the swap around on old 395 at the border between the states. Three trucks from California would pull up and two from Nevada would pull out.

But let me tell you what scares me. You seen that goofball from down under with the cute yankee wife who doesn't have the sense gawd gave a goose around animals?

He's become a star over here. It must be something to do with the old "if mama hates him he's gotta be kewl" school of thought.

Neil:
Great fun watching the doctor pick the gravel out of ones body. Even greater fun when its on the sit portion and one spends all his time standing till nature has healed the body.

I have seen some pictures of the truck trains. Must be an impressive sight and also give the olifactories a new sensation. Of course a side benefit would be an excuse for a cold Foster's to remove the dust from one's throat!!

Don't worry. I have voiced my opinion on Steve Irwin here before. I think he is a clown and he doesn't give us a good name I don't think /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Mate I can't say I have EVER had a fosters !!!

Here in Florida towing double trailers is legal. However, you must have a "doubles" endorsment on your cdl license.

Guess it's pretty obvious I'm ignorant of what are considered good brands Down Under.

Neil,

You asked for a pic of this thing quite a while ago and I finally got around to taking one over the weekend. Here is one with the trailer tilted up in the loading process.

Here's one with the bed down and ready to go. The front wheels of the white pickup are on the swivel platform. With the front of the trailer down the back lifts the platform and off we go. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Sorry I hadn't got back to this post sooner Gary.

Thanks very much for the pics.

But what the hell is that you use for a tow vehicle?

When you said a truck I thought you meant on the those big pickups or suv's or whatever you guys call them.

But that is a full-on semi isn't it?

I will send these pics to my mates, but what I want to know is, can you legally tow that with a normal size pickup like what is on the trailer.

That's what we want to know !!

But very impressive I must say.

Cheers

Neil,

Usually I use the red Tahoe you see on the trailer to do the towing. I happened to have that little Peterbilt with a receiver hitch so thought that might make a better picture for you.

As to it being "a full on semi," it really isn't. This is a single (rear) axle unit. Also, this is what we call "a day cab" in that it has no sleeper. This one happens to have a fifth wheel on it but could just as easily have a 9' dump bed and hoist instead. It's really not that big of a truck. This one has a 300HP Caterpillar 3216 diesel with an Eaton Super 10 speed transmission (like the old 5 + 2's).

For pulling something like this trailer the Pete 330 is really overkill. I bought it to pull an eight place, 40,000 lb. GVW car hauler I'd bought. That's a far better match for it.

My red Tahoe handles that trailer with my Deere 4200, FEL, BH and a mower or box blade with no problems. If I were going to do a lot of towing with two vehicle as you see here I'd probably go with a Suburban K-2500 with a towing package.

As to being legal, I'm completely legal with my Tahoe so long as I have a brake controller for the trailer brakes. I can pull a tri-axle four car hauler with a pickup legally, also.

If you want me to look for any other pictures of unusual (to you) things we do here, just ask. I'll be happy to help.

Yes please Gary. We get a kick out of all things automotive.

My mate was impressed with your pics and thought that was just your "little" truck

We have a perception that all yanks drive "yank tanks" - eg. BIG TRUCKS.

He showed me Toyota's website in the US which has a 4 runner with a V8 engine in it.

geez we are stuck with Hiluxes (4 runners are the same shape for us) with piddly diesels and the occasional V6.

Cheers
