INMATE DROWNS IN MOWING ACCIDENT

GULFPORT A state inmate who drowned in a mowing accident Thursday at Coffee Creek was three months away from being a free man.

Mireyel Scott, 33, of Leflore County was serving time on a drug conviction at a Community Corrections Work Center in Gulfport for inmates with non-violent backgrounds. He was working on a city beautification crew at the Clower-Thornton Nature Area north of East Railroad Street.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said Scott was operating a large mower shortly before 10 a.m. at the edge of the creek when the ground gave way and the mower flipped. The mower landed in the water upside down, pinning Scott underneath. He was wearing a seat belt, Hargrove said.

Good to see another MS coast resident on here.... The day I read about that it really hit home, as every commercial property I cut has ponds with steep slopes.
