Unlock sim card

I have a virgin mobile nokia phone which I use when I travel to the UK. Its a pay as you go phone. ( Its a good deal as you dont loose the airtime purchased and means that you have a uk number when there). My son is off to France for the summer and fall. If I keep the phone with the UK SIM the price is $2.00 per minute but drops to about $.75 with a French SIM card for domestic, but before I do this I may need to unlock the phone. How can I check this and where can I get it unlocked?

Your cell service provider (vigin mobile) can unlock the phone. Whether they will or not is another story.

Generally with GSM in the rest of the world, your phone will work pretty much anywhere (except the US). The sim card has everything on it including the phone number. He should be able to buy a French sim from someone like 0044 (International Sim Cards from 0044. (Global SIM Cards)) and have no problems. This is very common in Europe. Unfortunately, the US has the worst mobile phone system(s) on the planet and you have to buy a different phone here....so much for "free trade".

So I looked on ebay.co.uk and they have a card at about $20.00, but I also checked with the 0044 site.Their people were very helpful, basically its caveat emptor as with all things on ebay and so ill go with the 0044 site.Nothing would be worse then getting to a new country only to find that the card doesnt work.

My advice is to take it to France and ask for unlocking there. AFAIK it is much more common to find unlocking service in Europe - in Prague every cell phone store provides this service for 3 - 5 bucks.

Hey i can't believe I am able to help. What your son should do is simply buy a 39 Euro telephone in France that takes the Orange phone service.

This is the cell phone I jsut bought within the last month. We have used Orange for at least 5 years now and I like it. You buy minutes at any post office as well as stores.

I hope your son will be suing Skype to talk with his friends in the states.

Where is your son staying in france? What will he be doing here?
