Tractor
2003 Kubota L3130
Hello everyone,
I'm just starting to use my first tractor...a Kubota L3130. I dug out a stump the other day and then tried to lift it out of the hole using my LA723 loader. Chains setup directly perpendicular (underneath) loader back/mount plate. Tractor wouldn't do it.

I dug a ramp pulled the stump out of hole with backhoe and was then able to lift the stump (same position as before) about half an inch off the ground. Enough for me to slowly bring it to the back of my property and not destroy my lawn. This whole experience surprised me. The lift capacity of my the LA723 are as follows :

  • Lift Capacity to Max. Height at Pivot Point, lbs (kg) .......... 1870 (848)
  • Lift Capacity to Max. Height at 500mm from Bucket Pivot Point, lbs (kg) .......... 1400 (635)
  • Max. Breakout Force at Bucket Pivot Point, lbs (kg) .......... 2605 (1181)

I attached a pic of the stump. It is basically a 4' or 5' ball. Does it really weight a lot more then I thought or do I not understand lift capacity or is something wrong with my tractor? Thanks for any thoughts.

You may have been close when you pulled it out but it lost significant water weight drying out. You also changed the geometry of the lift by raising it out of the hole so instead of lifting up and pushing it away from the tractor it was lifting and pulling if that makes sense. Hard to know when you're right at the cusp of moving or not moving it.

Another point, how much does your bucket weigh? More than likely that is not included in the specs so easy 150-200lbs there.

Are your rear tires 'loaded'?

How much FEL counterbalance did you have mounted on the Three Point Hitch?

I had a L3130 with the 723 loader;don't think there is anything wrong just under-powered for the "load".
I had all I could do to unload a 1K bush-hog off a trailer with mine;loaded tires and 250LB.man on hitch.

that stump weighs 1853lbs!!

But seriously - it is big, and dirt and root wood are surprisingly dense. Glad you were successful.

The bucket and skid steer quick-attach plate DO reduce loader capacity - significantly.

Stumps root balls are heavy. Where your load center of gravity is important in relation to lift point. Try to get them close together. Had many loads I could curl up but not lift up.

In general stumps are heavy. There’s at least 3000 pounds here if not more

I see stumps in yards often that my trackhoe cannot load into dump truck but can lift enough to set on trailers so I estimate 10-12k pounds.
