Unable to start CC HDS2135

My mother has a 2135 with a Kohler command motor. It's been sitting for bit, and today I changed engine and hydro oil. Couldn't start it after. I change the plug and fuel filter earlier this summer. Good spark when I pulled the plug, and I can see fuel in the filter.

It backfires a lot with the choke and seems like it's close to starting, but not close enough. Can't find the manual right now. Any suggestions?

If it has been sitting for an extended period then the fuel system including the carburetor and /or fuel pump may be gummed up.
A fuel stabilizer or running the tank dry of fuel is generally recommended prior to extended storage.

If indeed the fuel has gone bad draining the old fuel and replacing with fresh along with some Techron or other fuel system cleaner "may" be of help.

When cranking remember to give the starter a break to cool off after extended attempts (anything more than 15 or 20 seconds). Otherwise you could wind up with a burned up starter also.

If you try starting fluid go easy with that stuff it is volatile and can damage internal engine parts if over-applied.

So it ran perfectly prior to you changing the engine and transaxle oil? I don't think those would be related. If the fuel system stays primed and you are getting spark, are the spark plugs wet? You might have some nasty old gasoline in there.
