Rotary Cutter Unable to disengage drive line from from gearbox...

...after about 20 hours of mowing. Even with shear pin removed the drive line is more or less frozen to the gearbox input shaft.

Is there a trick to getting these things off? Apply a little heat, perhaps? I'm reluctant to just start hammering on it until I know what I'm doing.

Seems like this could be a common problem - would appreciate any advice on how to proceed!

Why are you removing it? Just curious. I'd shoot it up with a little penetrating oil and whoop on it with a heavy brass punch.

Just want to clean it up, apply some grease and stow it for the season as opposed to leaving it out.

I have had the sheer bolt heads to break off but the bolt not completely sheered. Impossible to get holes lined up so you can drive the rest of the bolt out. There was distorted bolt material still in there that would not let the holes line up good enough for an exit path. I went ahead and mowed an area that usually resulted in several sheers but it would not finish off. Had to deliberately catch a stump I knew about and start beating it to death. Finally completed the sheer and could do the usual removal process after allowing the shaft to spin a bit to wipe the bolt clean.

Not fully removing it but it would not be hard to. About every 5th shear bolt I break I slide pto shaft back and smear some anti seize on input shaft to keep it easy moving for changing shear bolts

mine always shear completely. Top of cutter is piled with little bolt sections. I always get the nut back off of sections if they don't fly. Got to save a penny where you can
