two questions on the massey

new to having a pto on a tractor my 1547 has the plastic cover that is held on with two bolts. do i have tho replace the cover every time( the 2 bolts will get old quick) or can i get a slip on cover . and it says the rated rpm is 2600 should that be the rpm i use it at ? it is a hst... it seems to make less hydro noise at the higher rpm but it sure sounds like it is screaming... jon

That cover is really only there to protect the shaft during shipping. I asked to have my cover so I could install it when I wasn't using the pto, um never have put it back on. No reason to put the bolts in if you don't want to, the holes are at a dead end in the case, but installing them will stop stuff from going in there just in case you fine a use for the bolt holes.

About you RPM... Do you have a "PTO" rpm range (green) on your rpm gauge? I have a 1533 geared trans and what I do is keep it at the high end of the range (around 2650) when using the PTO, then if it drops under load to 2450 rpms I know I am using to high of a gear for the job. So I guess you're asking if the rpms right, yes I would run it at 2600 WHEN using the PTO, but NOT when just doing other things, drive it like a car. (rpms is IMO, I don't have a hydro, but I wouldn't see why the tractor would need to stay at 2600 ALL the time)

the tach has the green yellow and red on it is that for pto i think the pto speed is the same as yours while pto-ing i keepit on the pto mark but the manual says while using ground contact stuff use rated rpm.. the problem is rated is i think 2600 and that i think is in the red on the tach.. long sentance for is the color just for pto use???jon

Ok I see what you are getting at, yes I would think you would go with 2600 doing any type of "load" work on the tractor, all your power (toque/hp) is at that rpms.

Now with my gear drive I just set the rpms where it will do the job in the gear that I am using, like yesterday I was doing box blade work, I just left it in high range 1st gear and use the gas pedal, I don't think I ever went past 1500 rpms, but that was just to do it a bit faster in the gear I was using.

I guess I should stay out of this one, hydro is just so different then what I have.

it is a learning curve for my i have an old 40 b that i thought was a hydro but i think it has a torque converter it has hi and low and a 1st and 2nd gear just hit the forward peddle for forward and back for back..and most work was done at pretty low rpms just push it down further and it went faster. the new one goes faster and the rpms go up with the forward peddle but it really growns at lower rpms ...-1500 on the tach.. in three weeks i might even master this thing and feel like the old glove the 40 b is.. to bad the 40 has to go..

From the safety point of view and especially if there are children about I would spend two minutes and have the safety cover on whenever the pto is not being used and no it is not just a TRANSPORT cover.

I took the PTO cover off on my 1652. Too tight a fit for most of my attachments. I always replace when not running the PTO though.

Took ours off, in a cabinet on the garage. Use the PTO too much to R&R at each use.

Which "rated " rpm are you talking about? There is a generally "max rated power rating" and a power rating at the engine rpm that gives you 540 rpm at the pto out put shaft. The former is the max power the engine will develop as installed in your machine and the latter is the max horsepower available at the pto shaft at the engine rpm that gives you 540 pto rpm.
