Richard, a cleaning solution that works well for brass is 2 ounces of Murphy's oil soap, 4 ounces of acetone, 4 ounces of ammonia and 1 gallon of water. Ten minutes or so in an ultrasonic cleaner should do it. Or simply use a container large enough to completely submerge the movement and let it soak. Warm cleaning solution will work better than cold. Rinse with clean water and thoroughly dry.

My friend had a clock from the 1700 or 1800s
and it would not keep time. I sprayed it with carb
cleaner and then with silicone spray and as far as
I know its still ticking today.
