Internally, perhaps. Externally, it depends on how well you keep the clutch adjusted. There's supposed to be a minimum 2mm gap between the fingers and the bearing face. If permitted to rub, they can damage the bearing housing.

I got another question for you. The tach on my tractor reads around 600 at idle. sounds more to the ear to be about 800 or so, who knows. At full throtle a tad under 1600 is all I can get. Was yours like this from the factory? I wonder if i am 200 off or it needs adjusting.

Probably more than 200 Dwayne. If you've got the 485 engine, I'm thinkin' you should be able to rev to at least 2400. The tach sending unit is screwed into the side of the bellhousing so it can count flywheel teeth. With the tractor NOT running, loosen the locking nut and carefully screw the sending unit in till you feel it touch the flywheel. Back it out a quarter turn, and tighten the lock nut. See if that doesn't accurize your tach readings some. It may take some fine tuning, cuz closer is better. But finding the sweet spot can cost you a sending unit if it gets hit by moving flywheel teeth. Careful.

Thanks, I'll give that a try when I go to the farm saturday or sunday. I'll also be changing/cleaning spools on the LW-6 and I have a steering issue. Chip seems to think maybe the fluid is low or foaming or possibly a leak, but he's sending me a seal kit just in case. Darn thing wanders all over the road at speed and wheel spins freely sometimes before and after it hits the stops. Yes, its the 485 engine. Very smooth running engine. I think I was wearing poor Chip out with questions so I thought I would try getting a little info here.

I may be worn out by not by your doing! Gregs advice about hte tach sensor adjustment is right on, sometimes they get set just on the edge of working and get a weak signal that under counts the RPM. I know I'd hate to count those teeth at 2000 rpm or more. I don't even want to count them standing still!
hey Chip, good news. I drained the power steering and refilled with 30 wt hydraulic fluid. The steering is working great now. Fluid sure was dirty to. The tach adjustment worked to. I swapped backhoe spools, just the internal part and its a little better, but still not quite right. Its useable for sure and that's what i am going to do. When i set it off to mow later this summer. I'm going to disassemble the whole valve body and look for dirt/swap valve bodies. I'm thinking now perhaps that particular valve is just not machined exactly right.
