Trying to hire and they are all "Drawing"

This is a sad but common problem to be sure. I agree that the government has to take the vast majority of the blame for making unemployment look too good. A couple of years ago, my wife and I saw a news story about people on food stamps and how hard they had it. Interviews of shop owners revealed that every month, as soon as the stamps arrived, they would completely sell out of all the steaks and lobsters. By the end of the show, I came to the conclusion that most food stamp recipients actually have a much larger monthly food budget than we do. Now, don't get me wrong, we eat really well, but if I had a food stamp budget, I'd eat like a king!

We need welfare reform alright. It's much too good and easy to get.

Ken, if I was within 30 miles of you, I'd work for you. As it is, I'm frozen to the Canadian border, slinging windows for the last 20 years. Only 20 years to go! WOO-HOO!

No, I have not tried that. I am looking for someone in my community or within a 15 mile radius. The unemployment office is 30 miles away. Ken Sweet

Not trying to be rude, but this doesn't make any sense to me. So because the unemployment office is 30 miles away, people local to you wouldn't apply there for a job?

30 miles is the minimum distance for me to get to anyplace worth getting to!

If you hire thru the UE office, they will screen employees for you ( at least here in Michigan ), and I think paying cash is dumb. Our employees get paid legally, and they pay their taxes.

Maybe this makes sense. The people that are drawing a unemployment check are not going back to work anywhere until the checks quit coming. Ken Sweet

How much money are they drawing? I have never been on unemployment but certainly have been underemployed, my own fault of course.

I have no way of knowing how much they are drawing? I guess it depends on what you are drawing on or in the case of unemployment, past wage history may play a part in it. I really don't know. Ken Sweet

IL has a bad system. A person can draw XXX amount on UE. They are allowed to make a very small amount without losing benefits. The problem is if they earn more than what is allowed they lose their benefits. You can actually work enough to lose your benefits and still earn less than what you could draw on UE. That just encourages people to not work.
A friend of mine used to drive a delivery truck. Seems like he and his co-workers would get laid off every January and February. The company he worked for would call them each back to work 1 1/2-2 days a week. That was just enough to make them ineligible for UE benefits thus the employer was able to keep their contributions to UE at a lower rate. My buddy never turned down any work but it cost him money to work part time like that.

Unemployment in the county where I live is over 13%. What a mess!

In IL past wage history and number of dependents (with an upper limit) is the determining factor on what someone draws. I have no idea what they actually draw though. Used to be what the average person earned in 1 1/2-2 days.
They're not living high on the hog on UE alone.
Some are drawing UE, have a Link card (food stamps), and getting assistance with their utility bills.

Whatever they draw, they'll want twice that to work as after all they got the U I for doing nothing!
Also when the U I runs out they then will go on welfare.

Around here the U I's and welfare hire snow remouval contractors to clear their drives.
Narurally the contractor can not collect most of the time and if he sues for collection the welfare types have free lawyers.

Back when, in Canada, you'd lose your U I if you turned down a job.
The do gooder lawyers contested that because it was 'demeaning' to force a person to accept a job other than his customary trade, so now they get U I to do nothing.

GRRR!

We have been trying to hire another employee to work in the shop at our shipping facility and everyone we have approached so far, is Drawing a gumment check of some sort and can't work at a public job. They say it will mess up their check. Really a sad situation. Ken Sweet

Just curious to know if you are offering full-time or part-time employment and if it is long-term or seasonal for a few weeks/months. I can see someone turning it down if it wasn't something that was full time or permanent if it meant that they lost their UE for good. Looks like they could draw it off of you if you laid them off, though.

With that said, the majority of the people that I know on UE aren't really looking for anything full-time or permanent, just the small odd jobs for cash. I'll never understand the logic because I believe the maximum you can draw in Alabama is about 270 dollars a week.
