A big rig lost a tire that jumped the center divider of the 5 freeway in San Clemente and hit a Tesla on Friday morning, killing a woman inside, according to the California Highway Patrol. A call about the collision on the northbound side of the 5 freeway just south of Avenida Magdalena came in at about 8:53 a.m., according to the CHP incident log.

Very sad, but the fact that the tire hit a Tesla is irrelevant. Why did the news not provide the truck manufacturer? Pete, KW, Freightliner?

It seems like the tire manufacturer would be even more important. Also; front, rear, or trailer tire? What color was the Tesla, and what did the truck driver have for breakfast?

There was a similar incident on the Interstate here earlier this year. A State Police detective who had stopped to help a motorist was struck and killed by a tire from a tractor trailer.

About ten years ago a set of duals came off a semi, went through the median, and hit a HD Ram truck at the top of the windshield/roof area. The Ram was towing a big camper and pulled off into the ditch without crashing. Very lucky as the media said there were no serious injuries and the cab was toast.

Mine was a sarcastic remark meant to expand on Big Barn's comment. In the accident which I cited, the cause was

all of the lug bolts had been sheered off.

Failing components on the outside assembly caused the wheels to separate from the hub assembly and not loose lug nuts, Cote said. He added that investigators found cracks and defects in the log holes of the inside wheel.

Not too many years ago a semitruck tire blew in the lane beside me. His tire bounced just in front, and then over my car. We both pulled over and best we could tell nothing touched my car. Not my Tesla.
