Troybilt/Garden Way/MTD ?

When did Garden Way sell "Troybilt" to MTD?
Did MTD also buy rights to use the "Garden Way" name?

I recently purchased a used Troybilt "Pony" tiller and am curious as to which company made it. The ID tag on the tiller is not legible and the engine has been changed. The tiller looks almost new but one of the labels includes the Troybilt New York address followed by the "Garden Way" trademark.

If I remember correctly MTD purchased Garden Way out of bankruptcy court in 1998. If it has the Garden Way name it was most likely made by Garden Way.

Thanks for the info. I just couldn't remember when MTD bought them. I didn't think they bought rights to the Garden Way name, but wasn't sure.

My understanding is the MTD got the tiller and mower lines, and Murray got the snowthrower and chipper lines.
