Troy bilt horse starter

Anybody got any tips on how to reassemble an electric starter on a horse. I am having trouble getting the brushes to stay in place. When I took it off I wasn't aware that it came apart like that and now it seems I have made myself a mess. Thanks

I use a thin putty knife or two to hold down the brushes, usually try to clamp the brush end in a vise to help as a third hand.
