I bought an 80 vintage Horse II tiller. Sometimes when you try to put it in high or low gear you can see the wheel axle try to slide back and forth. The guy I bought it from had place 4 big washers on both sides between the wheel hub and the transmission case to keep it from doing this. Does this sound right to you guys?
Thanks in advance for your help and comments

NO, if I remember correctly there is a keeper behind the axle seal. I will do some research and get back with you. I had a 80's vintige Horse and I changed the axle seals and something makes me think I changed a keeper also. I will find my manual and let you know

Bob,
I have a mind like a steel trap! LOL I looked in my manual and there is a retaining ring behind the axle oil seals. It is called a Retaining Ring, it is part number 9511, it is actually just a external snap ring the fits in a machined groove. Pull the wheels and oil seals off and you can see where it goes, you can probably get a snap ring at a parts store if you don't have access to troy parts.
