It appears that there is pressure in the unattached loader hoses which is preventing me from coupling them to the hydraulic system of the tractor. Is there a trick to relieving the pressure without resorting to hitting it with a hammer? I'm afraid of damaging the coupler.

If the ends of the couplers are threaded onto the hose take two wrenches and start to unthread the fittings. It takes very little movement of the threads to relieve the pressure. Whenever you take a implement off a tractor lower it to the ground, turn off the engine, then move the lever in the tractor in as many directions as possible 5-6 times to relieve the pressure. Then detach the implement. At that point there should be no pressure in the lines and it should be easier to attach next time.
PS- I am not too keen on hitting the end of the coupler metal on metal. See if you can find a wooden dowel or something similar. Hammer on the wood if possible.

Use brass rod or push the male coupler against a hard surface. Use a rag. Works for me.

I try to remember to release pressure by turning tractor off and moving control levers in all directions before disconnecting hoses. However that being said I sometimes forget or the pressure seems to build if parts bleed down. I carry a hard face rubber mallet and when this happens I cover the end of the fitting with a rag and tap the end of the fitting to relieve the pressure. Be sure to cover the end of the fitting otherwise you could get sprayed with high press Hydraulic fluid. Not nice stuff, especially if it hits your eyes

The couplers were threaded and I ended up using that method. Once I let a few drops of fluid run out they went on easily. Thank you for your help. Always learning.

I keep a couple copper pipe caps handy for this. I think I have 3/4" and 1" caps that I picked up at Lowes or Home Depot. I cover the male fitting with the copper cap, wrap a rag around it, and smack it with a hammer. The copper protects the steel fitting from the hammer blow and the rag soaks up the fluid that is released. One or two sharp taps is all that is needed.
And on mine, I always relieve the pressure before detaching. But if it is cool when I remove the hoses and then warm when I reattach, there will be pressure.
