Whittle designed the engine and the plane was called the Meteor.

The Meteor was used to pursue and shoot down the German V-1's if I recall correctly; but that was about it. The Me 262, of course, saw considerable combat at the end of the war; Chuck Yeager is credited with shooting down at least one in his P-51 Mustang.
