Why is cheddar cheese yellow????

Jim cheese and butter during the ww11 era was made from what ever oleo could be extracted from because all milk products went to the war effort. Remember that butter came in sealed package with red dye pill that had to be mixed into the mass before a proper color look to be called butter was used.
same for cheese. and took a coupon from government issued book to purchase.
Cannot remember any griping at having to do this . it was a coupon or do with out.

Hmmm...it could have been during WWII - we were miling 6-8 cows druing that peirod and making our own butter. After the war we were milking hte same number cows but buyin oleo as we could sell the cream for more than the oleo cost.

Hi I was about 7 when the war started and so Dad had to work extra building for contractor so the kids were given the chores to do. Already the feeding of chickens and gathering the eggs. the taking care of the hogs and preparing the mash to sit over night. then feed in the morning. including feeding the calves.
so my brother and I were given the cows to milk. total of 14 stall in the barn. milked by hand and then
filter the milk and my job was turning the handle of the cream separator to slow the ball went clink,clink and get yelled at to fast my older Bro. again yelled to slow down the ball had to stay in middle of the slot for viewing. in handle.
load the cream in 10 gal cans into back seat of the '29 Oldsmobile so Dad could drive by creamery to get previous days cans and a check for weight (never heard of butter fat content)

Wash up eat breakfast and get to school . Evening the same except not the rush. but now carry in wood for evening heat and cooking.

Been retired 21 years and still seems like yesterday.
