Trenching with a Massey SCUT

Thanks for the information. I will call BX Expanded and ask about Massey products. I really think the 6" bucket is my best chance at trenching through the difficult rocky soil. So if I hit a large submerged boulder, I just go around it instead of trying to fight it. It will be worth a try if they make such a product.

If you get a trencher, skip any wheeled ones, rent a mini skid steer with a trencher attachment or at least a tracked trencher.

The nice thing about the mini skid steer is that the chain is reversible (to clear jams) and also you can lift the chain up with the boom, so if you get a rock that the chain won't move, you can back up and pull up so that pulls the rock out.
Having used both, I would never go back to using one of the little wheeled ones again.

IIRC, the tracked mini skid steer was about a hundred bucks more a day, but at the end of the day you weren't worn out from fighting the trencher.

The mini skid steer was also nice in that you could use it to push the dirt back in.
The one that I rented came with the land leveler attachment that was nice to flatten everything back out and make it smooth.

If you're going to use PEX, you could use a subsoiler with a piece of pipe on the back to bury the PVC in a slit trench, much faster than trenching and backfilling.

I was going to bury several hundred feet of wire in roots and rocks, using a home made cable plow.
I ended up not doing that, but my plan included doing a “dry run” over the projected route, so that in case of trouble, I could raise up or reverse course without risking damage to the wire.
I’d do the real thing when all obstacles were overcome.

I hired a contractor to run my Natural gas line from the road to the house, they used a hammerhead mole system. All I had to do was dig a 3 foot by 4 foot trench every 10 to 15 feet for the mole to change direction. Was quick, painless and very little mess. My lawn was saved!

They have different heads-mine was soft soil so all they needed was the hammerhead head but they even have one that will penetrate rock and concrete.
