Still looking since thats half the fun!
I found that a few a few trees on my property had barbed wire wrapped around the trunk. Some of the wire appears to have been their for years as I cant pull it out of the tree.

These are white oaks that look pretty matrue 20-30 years old Im guessing. All are producing leaves and look healthy except for a few dead branches.
I know pics will help but the batteries died on the camera.

Will the wire harm the trees in the long run? What can I do to help these guys survive?

I'd just clip the wire as close to the tree as possible and go on. I cannot imagine the wire hurting the tree (especially as it obviously grew around the wire), but you may want to check with an arborist or possible the local county extension office.

Well it's too late now to do anything about it, if the tree has grown around it.

We had a project that required the removal of numerous fir trees that were very straight and about 18"-24" in diameter.

The logger rejected several because of a black discoloration found near the center of the tree. He said it indicated metal somewhere in the tree. We went back and sure enough, the stumps with the discoloration were all in a row. The fence had been gone for at least 50 years.

Yeah, just clip wire as close as you can to tree, it'll be fine. If it was pine the wire might leave it susceptible to bugs. Oak'll be fine. Got lots down here with wire. (a few with bullets too) /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
