What's the going rate for having equipment transported on a lowboy? One piece would have to be moved 200 miles and another 270 miles. Pick up and delivery locations are all in Illinois.

Around here a one way trip within city limits is $125 using a Land-all. Your probably going to be charged by the mile. Probably about $2.00/mile.

I can't answer your question directly but do offer a recommendation. Try wew.uship.com. I've been using it for 3 years now and have had nothing but great luck.

Works like eBay. Post your commodity that you need transported (with weight and dimensions), post the pick-up and delivery locations and finally, post a time frame that you need it done in. Then sit back and watch the bids roll in. Companies will bid on your move. Their bids are available for other shippers /carriers to see and then it starts getting competitive.

I've had terrific luck but make sure to read the fine print with each shipper, check insurance coverage and just like eBay, review their feedback.

Good luck!

I was quoted $800 for a 200 mile haul. Basically $2 a mile loaded, and $2 a mile unloaded for his drive home. Didn't know if that was reasonable or if I should look for someone else.

Thats about right. $5 per load mile with a minimum and a load fee is the norm around here.

You obviously don't buy diesel fuel, large vehicle insurance, local/state and federal permits! Fill out a log book, are told when you can drive, must stop to get weighed, prohibited to use certain roads!

A rule of thumb we always used was roughly the cost of a gallon of fuel per loaded mile. So if diesel was $3.99/gal it would be $4 a loaded mile. Sounds about right.
