Have a small JD 870 and a 254 Chinese tractor.
Both manuals say to use same oil for transmission and hydraulics.
JD says use Hy-Gard for everything. Chinese tractor manual recommends N100D for both
transmission and hydraulic. I know what Hy-Gard is but not what Chinese call N100D oil is.
Can you guys recommend something that should work okay in both tractors?

Thanks for your time

I'm quite sure any fluid that meets Hy-Gard specs would be more than perfectly acceptable for your 254.
Use what you have for the 870.
Good Luck!
Thanks much for reply number two!

I've been running tractors up to 100 HP and 7 quantity of many colors for 45+ years. I use JD's J20C spec for my hydrostatic transmission, or steering, wet brake, transmission/differential/steering fluid spec when deciding on a fluid for that purpose. Reason being is the quality of the spec and the fact that usually if there is a spec that is applicable (listed on the container), J20C will be in the list.

I bought 5 gallons of J20D because someone said it was a bit better in colder climates where I live.

I have 254 Chinese tractor similar to Nortrac. I want to drain and refill all Trans-hydraulic fluids. So far I have found and removed 3 drain plugs (not the engine oil drain plug). In total, I have drained out about 5 gallons of old Trans-Hydraulic fluid.

1) One drain plug directly below transmission.

2) One large drain plug directly below rear axle.

3) One drain plug for 3 point hitch lift oil.

My question is where are the fill points? I know that the Hydraulic lift fill plug is a large tubing on the rear of the tractor and the transmission fill plug is right next to the 4 speed shifter. But how does the rear axle get refilled?

Are the transmission and the rear axle the same reservoir? Do both get filled from the same location?

Thanks for your time.

Sorry for your troubles, but those are questions to ask BEFORE draining the oil. First figure out the correct oil required( gear oil or hydraulic oil or hydraulic/transmission oil) and buy it…with some extra for topping off. Same with filters of all sorts, but I digress. Then consult the owners/shop manual again for the correct procedure. If you don’t have a manual disregard all the above suggestions and begin again…this time the number 1 goal is to buy a shop manual…
It may be a good idea to support your local tractor shop in your future maintenance endeavours. Probably be cheaper in the long run...
