Transmission/hydraulic fluid alternative to Permatran III

I want to change the transmission/hydraulic fluid in my MF 261. It has wet brakes and I've read that some non-dealer supplied oils might disolve the adhesive that bonds the linings to the brakes. Before I make a hundred mile round trip to buy the Permatran III that the manual calls for, let me ask. Has anyone used a different transmission/hydraulic oil in MF 261 for a long period of time with good results? The label on Lucas Universal Hydraulic Fluid seems to indicate that it will do the job. I'm open to using any brand that will be safe to use in my tractor.

Quick-lift HTB from the cenex co-op. The guy assured me it exceeded all major brands qualifications and compatibility requirements. Plus you can buy bulk (bring your own container) cheaper than the pails, saves huge when your buying 10's of gallons.

Many of the "universal" fluids are suitable, and can work. But they are cheaper because they do not always have additives that are as good.

If you avoid garden variety, generic name "universal" products, and stay with premium products such as the Kabota or Case fluid, or a product from a major oil company, I am sure they will work good for you.

Permatran is a very good product. I have seen a piece of my equipment run cooler, after changing it to Permatran.

I'm due my 50 hr service also for my MF 1635. You reckon the Traveller Premium universal fluid from Tractor Supply would be alright? It says it meets or exceeds the Permatran III specs. And also would Mobil 1 Turbo diesel fully snythetic 5W-40 be fine?

I wouldn't, I want a top quality product I don't have to worry about. I don't put a lot of hrs, on my stuff, so I can't save enough money to consider anything else. But, there are people using it.

Every single universal fluid I have ever seen, meets Permatran specs., so that is not really a big deal.

Some people report issues when using universal products, and some don't.

My dealer refers to Permatran as "liquid gold". Let me think, that could mean it's top of the line stuff for my 1010, or that he prices it like liquid gold...hmm.

I use AGCO permatran it was recommended by my Massey Dealer. It can be found at any agco dealer. But that may still be a good distance from you.
